2009 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers Worth Adding To Your Roster

Brian MillerJul 3, 2009

The baseball season is about half way finished and standings in fantasy leagues are pretty much set...or are they?

There are many productive players available in free agency or Waivers. I found this out first hand.

Before the season started I attempted a few times to draft an entire Milwaukee Brewers team. I was unsuccessful at these attempts and after various trade attempts I finally gave up on the concept a month ago.

I was in dead last place out of 10 teams. I decided I would take on a new challenge and drop all players who weren't worth keeping, That ended up being Prince Fielder, Yovanni Gallardo and Trevor Hoffman. The rest of my team I picked up off of waivers and free agency.

I changed the name of my team from Brian's Brewers to Brian's Vagabond's and in a month  moved into seventh place by using primarily players no one else wanted. Here is a list of Players I was able to find and a good addition to any roster lacking production.

I will start with the Posistion Players I was able to find.

Ben Zobrist, SS, TB Rays—with multi-position eligibility at 2B,SS and OF this kid is having a career year. He is hitting close to .300 with 16 long balls and 46 RBI and a month ago was available in 50 percent of leagues. He is now owned in 94 percent.

Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pitt. Pirates—This rookie can absolutely fly. I believe he is sub-10 seconds from home to 3rd during a triple. He has a decent bat as well, hitting .288

A.J. Pierzynski, C, CHI White Sox—He is still available in most league because of his bad reputation but he his hitting close to.300 and still has decent power numbers at the catcher position.

Marco Scutaro, 2B, Tor Blue Jays—He is another player that also holds multi-position eligibility at SS, 3B and 2B an all-around good player with decent speed, average, and power numbers.

Russell Branyan, 1B, Sea Mariners—He is on a tear in a ball park suited to a left-handed power hitter and he taking advantage of being able to be an everyday starter, hitting .300 with 20 Homers

Michael Bourn, OF, Hou Astros—A .300 hitter with 26 stolen bases is a good add to any team that needs depth in the stolen base dept.

Josh Willingham, OF, Was Nationals—He has been on a tear recently, improving his average to .288. He has 9 home runs in only 153 AB and is available in nearly all leagues.

Cody Ross, OF, Fla Marlins—He is a streaky hitter but has been consistant since he has been on my roster, hitting .274 with 14 home runs and 48 RBI is nothing to sneeze at.

Scott Podsednik, OF, Chi White Sox—He has been hitting decent of late and upped his average to .309 for the season. He is also always a threat on the bases, accumulating 12 stolen bases this year.

Casey Blake, 3B, LA Dodgers—Can be used for 1B/3B and is hitting .288 with 11 long balls and 48 RBI.

Nelson Cruz, OF, Texas Rangers—He is having a phenomenal season with 19 homers 47 RBI and 13 steals. He is a true all-around player.

I had other position players that I had while they were hot including Adam Kennedy, Jeremy Hermida, Juan Pierre, Todd Helton, Ian Stewart, Matt Wieters and Denard Span. Who are still decent adds if still available.

Pitchers

Rick Porcello, SP, Det Tigers—He has an 8-5 record and at one point won five starts in a row.

Edwin Jackson, SP, Det Tigers—His 6-4 record isn't impressive, but his 2.49 ERA is worth adding to your team along with a 1.04 WHIP and 84 strikeouts.

John Danks, SP, Chi White sox—His record isn't greatest but he does have 80 strikeouts on the season and is a decent add if you need to replace a SP on your roster.

Tommy Hansen, SP, Atl Braves—This rookie has settled in to the Majors nicely and has won his last 3 starts.

Ricky Romero, SP, Tor Blue Jays—This is another rookie worth adding. He is 6-3 on the year with a 2.85 ERA and 61 strikeouts

Andrew Bailey, RP, Oak Athletics—He has been closing games in Oakland for the last month or so and has eight saves and four wins on the year.

Jose Valverde, RP, Hou Astros—I added him one week ago and he is closing games again. With 97 percent league ownership you should pick him up if he is available.

George Sherrill, RP Bal, Orioles—With 17 saves, he should be on your roster if available

I have had other Pitchers that I dropped for one reason or another including Scott Downs, Mike Gonzalez, Chris Young, Josh Outman and C.J Wilson.

Believe it or not all of these players were available via FA or waiver with in the last 30 days. I moved up in rankings considerably the last month and I wonder how high I can go by the end of the season. I was at a disadvantage trying to draft a Brewers team so the average fantasy player with top picks from the draft on their roster should be able to fair better than me.

I hope this information was helpful..there may even be better caliber players available  in your leagues.
