Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Manchester United Wise to Block New Wayne Rooney Bid
The latest news on the Wayne Rooney transfer front shouldn’t discourage Chelsea supporters.
Manchester United reportedly shot down Chelsea’s latest £25 million bid to bring the star striker to Stamford Bridge, according to Jack Menezes of the Independent.
Menezes said a club spokesman confirmed the bid and subsequent denial.
"A bid was received yesterday and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale,” the official said.
But Rooney is understandably peeved by his role at Old Trafford, prompting the 27-year-old to be on the verge of submitting a formal transfer request as early as Friday, according to Neil Ashton and Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is undoubtedly prepared to afford Rooney more time on the pitch than he saw at United last season. After all, Mourinho has his sights set solely on the striker. He even went as far to describe this summer transfer period as “Rooney or bust.”
That’s understandable considering what a transfer from United to Stamford Bridge would mean for the Premier League.
And the powers that be at Old Trafford know it too. They're doing everything in their power to try to mend fences and move on with the striker this season.
Losing a caliber player like Rooney, especially to a top contender like rival Chelsea, could have immense repercussions for the club’s trophy hopes.
Adding him into a midfield already boasting top-tier talents like Oscar, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard would make the side a formidable foe for any of England’s best organizations.
Whatever ends up happening, the prospects of bringing Rooney into the fold appear to be good. While United doesn’t have to honor his transfer request, they may cave in order to avoid keeping the disgruntled player in their ranks all season.
Rooney simply doesn’t seem willing to play ball at Old Trafford this season. Besides usage issues, his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson is still strained after the former manager accused him of desiring to leave this summer; something he denies, according to Steve Brenner and Jeremy Wilson of the Daily Telegraph.
It’s smart, then, that United continues to decline Chelsea’s bids to acquire as much as possible in return for Rooney if they do end up shipping him off.
