Pistons' Rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Shows Epic Signature on Trading Cards

Grant HughesJun 8, 2018

Detroit Pistons rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope may have only spent two years at the University of Georgia, but he's clearly a man of letters. Three of them, to be exact.

Behold KCP's to-the-point signature:

Like Caldwell-Pope's mechanically sound jumper, there's no wasted motion here. Whereas many professional athletes opt for the effort-intensive approach of scrawling out a squiggly, illegible version of their full names, the No. 8 pick in the 2013 NBA draft is a model of autograph efficiency.

And who can blame him? His name's a mouthful.

For a player whose primary duty will be spreading the floor for the Pistons, KCP displays an excellent grasp of the concept of spacing. The intervals between each letter are uniform, allowing the consonants to breathe.

One criticism, though: He forgot the period after the "P." Does this indicate a lack of attention to detail that could compromise his career? What gives? Let's agree to monitor the situation.

Wisely, Caldwell-Pope includes a tiny indicator of his jersey number just after his three-letter signature. So if there's ever another NBA player with the same initials who wants to sign his name in a similar fashion, there won't be any confusion.

Clearly, he's thought of everything.

Well, except for the ridiculously easy potential for forgery. If you're planning to purchase a Caldwell-Pope rookie card in the near future, you might want to insist on a certificate of authenticity. When any six-year-old has the ability to produce an identical "signature," there's a good chance that more than a few fakes make their way into the market.

As with all things on Twitter that seem a little too good to be true, there's a distinct possibility this is a joke. But even if that's the case, it's hilarious and KCP should be commended for it.

If what we're looking at really is Caldwell-Pope's John Hancock, then a couple of things are true: 1) KCP is a busy man who doesn't waste time on elaborate signatures, and 2) "Handwriting 101" probably needs to make its way back onto the curriculum at the University of Georgia.
