Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Lorenzo Melgarejo Would Be Shrewd Acquisition
Liverpool could enjoy a giant influx of cash if they allow striker Luis Suarez to depart in this transfer window. Selling the Uruguayan would provide a welcome change in the climate around Anfield this summer.
However, losing their star man is something the Reds continue to resist.
That means the transfer budget for the Reds is a little more limited. With that in mind, Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo is an excellent loan target for the Reds.
David McDonnell of Mirror Football reported of the interest and notes that it was hard to see this one coming:
"Liverpool have made a surprise loan move for Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.
Boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to find a back-up left back for injury-prone Jose Enrique, and he sees the versatile 22-year-old—who can also play in a more attacking role—as the perfect option.
"
McDonnell also notes that Melgarejo is eager to get a chance to move to a league with the kind of competition that the EPL can offer.
Given all of that, this potential pairing offers an ideal situation for both parties.
With Benfica last year, Melgarejo began to blossom. He displayed his skills as a left-back and also demonstrated his versatility in other areas of the pitch, including midfield and even on the wing. It is that very versatility which makes this move a smart one for Liverpool.
The ability to play multiple positions has helped increase the value of Jose Enrique, and Melgarejo will bring that same kind of depth to the Anfield squad.
The 22-year-old is still light on top-class experience, although he more than held his own in Benfica's Europa League run to the final against Chelsea.
Still, there would undoubtedly be a period of adjustment with the regular step up in competition, but this is another reason why this pairing makes so much sense.
Melgarejo would be in a position to pick up playing time without the expectations that come with a starting spot. Enrique has been battling injuries and missing an increasing amount of game time as a result.
Last season, the 27-year-old was only able to start 25 EPL contests.
In other words, there is no reason to think that Enrique will be able to make it injury-free through the season.
This will allow the young Melgarejo a chance to develop and it will allow Liverpool not to be entirely dependent upon him.
A loan switch to Liverpool would be an excellent opportunity for Melgarejo to fulfill his potential, making this deal a smart one for the present and an even better move for the future.
