Liverpool Transfer News: Lorenzo Melgarejo Would Be Good Fit with Reds
Liverpool is looking to make a loan move for Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo in hopes of turning him into a permanent acquisition, according to David McDonnell of the Mirror.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is thinking of the 22-year-old as a backup to the injury-prone Jose Enrique, per the report.
Melgarejo would be an excellent addition.
Melgarejo played in eight games for Benfica last season, including the Europa League final against Chelsea. In all competitions, he posted two goals. He makes a lot of sense for Liverpool because he's a versatile option who can play a more attacking role for Rodgers.
As the attention largely centers on striker Luis Suarez right now, Rodgers may be working up a sneaky solid move for a young player with a lot of upside. After Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season, the club needs to continue to build with young pieces who can help, and Melgarejo fits the description.
Melgarejo should be better next season with extra experience under his belt. At a young age, he's already shown the ability to be a contributor in the EPL if he moves to the league.
Interestingly enough, Arsenal—a club going after Suarez—has also been rumored to be keen on the youngster, according to Robert Butler of Goal.com. If Liverpool can keep Suarez and add Melgarejo along the way, it would mark a solid window for the Reds.
Of course, there is still much work to be done at Anfield, but finding players who fit like Melgarejo is how momentum begins to build. If anything, Rodgers' interest in the 22-year-old is reason for optimism among Liverpool fans, even if it may take a bit for the club to get back on top.
It's not just the talent level, but also the make-up of a player that makes him a solid signing. Melgarejo could be a good one moving forward, on and off the pitch.
