Manchester United Transfer News: David Moyes Right to Give Up on Cesc Fabregas

Tom SunderlandJul 29, 2013

Failing with not just one, but quite possibly two Barcelona transfer pursuits this summer, David Moyes looks set to be rebuffed by Cesc Fabregas after a period of quite public interest.

Earlier in July, the Scotsman lost out to Bayern Munich in his pursuit of La Masia academy product Thiago Alcantara, a target whom the Red Devils had seemingly placed a lot of their faith in signing.

According to the Mirror’s David McDonnell, however, that won’t be the only failed chase of the club’s summer after it was revealed that Moyes is unsure whether he’ll submit a third bid for the former Arsenal midfielder.

"

I couldn't tell if there will be another bid but obviously we'll take stock of it and decide what we're going to do next. We've got until September 2 this year, that's transfer deadline day, so I'm confident we'll have players in by then.

I've never at any time said that we would get him [Fabregas]. We've just made offers that have been rejected. We'll take stock of the situation and we'll go from there.

"

This comes just days after it was looking hopeful that Fabregas could actually complete a return to the English top flight, with John Richardson of the Express alleging that he favoured a switch to Old Trafford.

However, it's now time for Moyes to cut his losses and concentrate on more realistic assets as the season’s start approaches.

With just three preseason friendlies left in their run-up to the campaign, the time for Manchester United to sign the dynamic and versatile box-to-box midfielder they’ve been lacking for some time now, is running out.

At Barca, Fabregas is back at his boyhood club and the side he pined after for so long during his final days with Arsenal. As such, it makes the playmaker’s move away from the Camp Nou that much more difficult, especially considering the space freed up by Thiago’s recent departure.

While he may be the type of talent the club needs, that isn’t to say Fabregas is the only asset who would fit Moyes’ desires right now.

The Metro's Jamie Sanderson reports of interest in Marouane Fellaini and Ilkay Gundogan, and an article by Charles Perrin in the Express back in February reported of interest in PSG's Marco Verratti. It is unlikely these players will go to the Theatre of Dreams for cheap, but they would appear to be more financially viable than Fabregas at this stage.

B/R's Stefan Bienkowski sees Moyes' moves as indicative of the Scot's control over the situation, spelling out an unfavourable disposition against the United boss:

By ending his chase of Fabregas, Moyes would be stamping his authority on the club in terms of his morals as a manager. People may lambast the helmsman for perhaps not providing the same allure as his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, but then not many do.

Sometimes, and especially in Moyes’ predicament, it’s sufficient to say “we tried.” Undoubtedly, not all Red Devils will see it that way, but these are the harsh realities the club may face in the wake of Ferguson’s departure.
