A Vickie Guerrero-Ryback Team is the Best Way to Re-Establish Their Relevance

If you blinked while watching Raw this week, you probably missed the seeds of a brand new alliance in WWE—former Raw Managing Supervisor Vickie Guerrero and Ryback.

Sure, the hug Ryback gave Guerrero on her way out of the arena Monday night could have just been a simple gesture of friendship. But we all know WWE does not do anything simple.

Consider the circumstances.

Guerrero had just been unceremoniously dumped as the Raw managing supervisor. Brad Maddox, Guerrero’s assistant and WWE’s resident weasel, was named to replace her, but he was given the title of Raw general manager—the same title that Guerrero coveted so much.

Remember that Ryback has a bone to pick with Maddox, too. While officiating the Hell in a Cell match between Ryback and then-WWE Champion CM Punk, Maddox hit Ryback in the crotch and caused him to lose. That began a storyline where Ryback was foiled in future attempts to win the title from Punk.

A Guerrero-Ryback partnership is the perfect plot to bring two somewhat stale WWE characters back into relevance by putting them in roles best suited for them.

As the managing supervisor, Guerrero drew her share of heat with her screeching voice and by melting in the presence of any WWE authority like Vince McMahon or Triple H. She was way out of her element as a person in charge. Her best days in WWE were spent at ringside managing the likes of Edge and Dolph Ziggler, and hopefully that will be where she winds up again.

Ryback is the type of musclehead character who needs to focus on ring work and leave it to someone else to do the talking. It’s no secret that Ryback, the bad guy, has not connected with the fans like WWE had hoped. Having Guerrero as his mouthpiece will bring the extra heat that his villainous performer needs to really get over as a prominent heel.

Guerrero and Ryback are not the only ones who will benefit from a partnership. Don’t forget about Brad Maddox.

It is early in his “administration,” but Maddox is the type of character who will try to throw his weight around backstage just because he was Vince McMahon’s choice to take the job. Never mind that he was given it begrudgingly—he still has the power, and he likely will do everything he can to misuse it.

The first thing he may have to do is find a way to keep Guerrero and Ryback from beating the tar out of him. Guerrero already took some shots at him moments after he was named GM. Imagine the weight of the bull’s-eye on his back if Guerrero had Ryback to do her bidding. Better yet, imagine the schemes WWE Creative could dream up to give Maddox ways to stay out of the line of fire.

It is a plotline that could take the three of them into SummerSlam and maybe beyond. It will re-establish Guerrero as a solid performer, reawaken the monster in Ryback and give Maddox a foundation on which to build what could be an interesting and reliable backstage character.

With that in mind, I give you "Team Vyback."
