Liverpool Transfer News: Lack of Luis Suarez Progress Is Troublesome for Reds

Tim DanielsJul 10, 2013

Any remaining hope Brendan Rodgers had for a summer without drama is quickly fading away. The Luis Suarez saga continues to drag on at a snail's pace, and the chances of a speedy resolution are slipping away with each passing day.

Amid talk of a reported offer, via The Times, from Arsenal checking in at £30 million, Suarez would only say he's happy that an English side remains interested and that there are multiple clubs viewed as options, according to the BBC. He's due to return for training with Liverpool later in the month. Via the BBC report:

"

When asked about Arsenal's offer, the Uruguayan international said: "It's good to know that after everything that's happened, teams in England still value me as a footballer.

"There are several options. There are two or three interested clubs and Liverpool know about this."

Yet, in the same BBC report, it states Suarez's agent met with the club's brass. During those discussions, he expressed that the talented striker wanted to play Champions League football but didn't submit an official transfer request. At least not yet.

In other words, very little has changed despite the flurry of activity. Suarez isn't committing his future to the Reds, but talk of a move persists despite the lack of a transfer request and the club's hope he will continue to lead the attack at Anfield.

Ever since the situation began to develop, one of the biggest concerns for Liverpool was getting things sorted out in a timely manner. Preferably with Suarez remaining in the fold, but finding a deal if that wasn't a realistic possibility.

At least under that scenario, Rodgers would have plenty of time and resources from the Suarez deal to seek potential replacements. Finding a player on Suarez's level would have been an uphill battle, but a couple of smaller additions could have done the trick.

What the club didn't want was for the saga to continue well into the transfer window with the new campaign quickly approaching. The longer it goes before a final decision is made, the tougher the challenge becomes for Liverpool to reach a favorable outcome.

But with Suarez failing to take a definitive stance, the progress has been slow, and that's the bad news for the Reds.

The task Rodgers faces is getting Liverpool to move back up the table after a disappointing campaign. He's made some solid moves since taking over last summer, and the progression was noticeable in the second half last season.

Watching Suarez leave Anfield would obviously be a step in the wrong direction. Losing him late in the window without an opportunity to replace him would be the nightmare outcome, which is why a quick decision one way or another would have been helpful.

Instead, Rodgers must hope for the best while preparing for the worst. That's a difficult way to prepare for a new campaign. But the manager has very few options.

The Suarez saga continues with no end in sight. That's not a positive sign for Liverpool.
