3 Veteran Free Agents the Miami Dolphins Should Bring in to Training Camp

Devin NoonanJun 6, 2018

With NFL training camp less than two weeks away, Miami fans everywhere are chomping at the bit to see how the revamped roster takes shape.

On paper, it looks as though this is one of the most promising teams Miami has put together in nearly a decade. Unfortunately, as the Philadelphia Eagles can attest, what is written on paper does not necessarily translate to on-field production.

As the roster spots begin to fill and depth charts take form around the league, there are still some veteran free agents who are eagerly awaiting a phone call.

While the 'Phins find themselves in a pretty comfortable position entering training camp, there are still a few players out there who can compete for roster spots and provide value to the preseason competition.

Here are three veteran free agents who would be well worth a look as the Dolphins dive head first into camp this month.

Brandon Moore, OG

Even after all of Jeff Ireland's free-agent spending, the Miami Dolphins' offensive line is still a major concern entering training camp. Featured Columnist Garrett Baker recently exposed some of the key question marks surrounding Ryan Tannehill's first line of defense.

Although there is still some doubt remaining about Jonathan Martin's ability to protect the blindside, both he and Tyson Clabo will undoubtedly suit up at tackle.

Mike Pouncey is a lock at center, but there is a heated battle in the interior for the two spots beside him. John Jerry has his weight issues, Dallas Thomas is an unproven rookie, Lance Louis is returning from a torn ACL and Richie Incognito isn't a pure zone-blocker.

Incognito is the one guy most people seem to pencil in due to his Pro Bowl nod last season, but his release would also free up at least $4 million in cap space.

With the Dolphins win-now mindset and Tannehill heading into a critical sophomore season, it'd be wise to consider bringing in a proven zone-blocking veteran to upgrade the interior.

Out of all the players left on the market, no one fits the bill quite like former New York Jets guard Brandon Moore.

Although he may be best known for his role as the "butt" in the infamous "Butt-Fumble", Moore has been a very reliable guard in the league over the past decade. He earned his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2011 and is agile enough to excel in the zone-blocking system.

For the right price, he can instantly act as an improvement over any of the guards on the current roster.

Laurent Robinson, WR

After being placed on injured reserve last season due to a series of concussions, the Jacksonville Jaguars cut ties with wide receiver Laurent Robinson early this spring.

A breakout year with the Dallas Cowboys in 2011 earned him a big payday with the Jags; however, his uncertain future and some changes in management ultimately led to his release.

Robinson made it clear that he still wasn't back to normal when the team let him go in March, but also made his intentions of returning to the gridiron very well-known.

Despite being cleared medically, it remains to be seen if he has truly made a full recovery. It certainly couldn't hurt to let him test the waters during training camp, especially at a discounted rate.

Considering the Dolphins' receiving corps is a bit short in stature, it would be well worth giving the 6'2" Florida native a look.

Vonta Leach, FB

3 of 3

Surprised to see this guy on the list? Didn't think so, considering Vonta Leach has been on the Dolphins' radar since the moment he hit the market last month.

According to NBC Sports, the 'Phins appear to be the front runners to land Leach despite the fact that they have yet to make an offer to the veteran fullback.

Considering the current make-up of the roster, it's hard to imagine a scenario where these two parties don't ultimately come to terms. The current battle for the starting fullback role consists of returning players Jorvorskie Lane and Charles Clay, neither of whom has done much to truly solidify their spot atop the depth chart.

While Clay is a versatile player capable of spreading out to tight end and Lane is your typical big bruiser, both players leave something to be desired.

Does that mean it is absolutely essential that the Dolphins sign Leach? No. Will it make or break the upcoming season? Probably not.

The fact of the matter is that Leach instantly upgrades both the rushing attack and pass protection while bringing veteran leadership to the table. How can you say no to that?
