Power Ranking the Stoppage Victories from Silva vs. Weidman Fight Card

Jordy McElroyJun 8, 2018

There certainly wasn't a shortage of surprises at UFC 162, with the biggest being Chris Weidman's mind-blowing knockout win over Anderson Silva.

The MMA world exploded on Saturday night after Weidman knocked off arguably the greatest fighter of all time and ended a near-seven-year run. For generations to come, the world will look back on this bout as one of MMA's great upsets.

The outcome was unforeseeable to even those bold enough to pick Weidman to win the fight. There was plenty of humble pie to go around after he dropped Silva with a left hook and dived in with a right hand to finish.

Weidman wasn't the only fighter making history on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

A former heavyweight title contender netted the third-fastest knockout in the history of the heavyweight division. A spectacular knockout by a certain featherweight threw another monkey wrench in the UFC title picture, and at lightweight, one fighter proved he doesn't even need punches to earn a TKO.

Let's rank the stoppage victories from UFC 162.

6. Mike Pierce Puts Away David Mitchell (TKO Round 2 at 2:55)

1 of 6

A pair of controversial split-decision losses to Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks has Mike Pierce hungry for another crack at upper-echelon welterweight opposition.

At UFC 162, Pierce definitely made a step in the right direction after landing a giant left hook followed by a few right hands to net a second-round TKO stoppage over David Mitchell.

The victory now puts Pierce on a four-fight win streak and on a surefire collision course with a current welterweight contender.

5. Brian Melancon Flat Lines Seth Baczynski (KO Round 1 at 4:59)

2 of 6

Strikeforce veteran Brian Melancon left Seth Baczynski an unconscious and bloody mess in his UFC debut.

Baczynski was never able to settle into a rhythm and capitalize on a fairly significant height and reach advantage. Melancon's success came from closing the distance and roughing the taller fighter up in the pocket.

Baczynski showed tremendous heart in surviving some really scary spots early, but a takedown late in the first round set up the vicious ground strikes that quickly turned the lights out on "The Polish Pistola."

4. Gabriel Gonzaga Makes History in Dave Herman Stoppage (KO Round 1 at 0:17)

3 of 6

Gabriel Gonzaga wasted little time and effort dispatching of Dave Herman in the only featured heavyweight bout.

The former heavyweight title contender needed only 17 seconds to land a crushing overhand right that handed Herman his fourth straight UFC loss.

He also set the record for the third-fastest knockout in the history of the UFC heavyweight division.

3. Edson Barboza Chops Down Rafaello Oliveira (TKO Round 2 at 1:44)

4 of 6

It was tough not to cringe when watching Edson Barboza methodically pick at Rafaello Oliveira's legs with unanswered kicks.

The swelling and discoloration of Oliveira's injured leg resembled something straight out of a horror movie. Despite every attempt, he was never able to nail the timing to check Barboza's kicks.

By the second round, referee Herb Dean had seen enough as Barboza kept landing kicks and Oliveira's leg began collapsing under his own weight.

2. Cub Swanson Stops Dennis Siver, Pushes for Title Shot (TKO Round 3 at 2:24)

5 of 6

Since losing to Ricardo Lamas in his UFC debut, Cub Swanson soared back into the featherweight title picture with five straight wins.

At UFC 162, he stopped top featherweight contender Dennis Siver in impressive fashion. He was forced to battle back from a little adversity after Siver stole the first round with a takedown and time on top.

By the time Round 2 rolled around, Swanson's confidence was growing in the stand-up department, and he was able to find a home for his straight right hand. While Siver is an incredibly strong featherweight, he isn't nearly as loose on the feet, and his reaction time tends to lag a bit.

In the third round, Swanson was able to land multiple right hands that eventually led to the fight-ending TKO.

1. Weidman Shocks the World, Knocks out Anderson Silva (KO Round 2 at 1:18)

6 of 6

Farewell to the king.

It is surreal that we now live in a world where Anderson Silva is no longer a UFC champion. After 10 successful title defenses, Chris Weidman brought Silva's iconic reign to a screeching halt on Saturday night.

To think, the vast majority of MMA fans didn't even know who Weidman was 48 hours ago. As cliche as it sounds, styles make fights. Things such as records and legacies are superfluous achievements when two individuals step into a cage.

With a 9-0 record, Weidman succeeded where some of the most respected legends of the sport failed.
