Did Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman Result Kill All the Superfights?

Matt JuulJun 8, 2018

As soon as Chris Weidman's fists sent Anderson Silva's body crashing down to the canvas on Saturday night, all hopes of a superfight between The Spider and either Jon Jones or Georges St-Pierre pretty much died.

Silva's hands down taunting, a staple of his stand-up style over the past few years, led to the now former champ's downfall, as Weidman brutally capitalized on The Spider's weak defense to steal the middleweight crown.

With a rematch with Weidman likely in the horizon for the 38-year-old Brazilian, any matchups with Jones or GSP will have to wait for a while, if they aren't already scrapped entirely.

While a superfight including Silva may be dead in the water, there are a few other champion versus champion battles the UFC can still put together.

One bout that I'm sure the MMA world would go crazy for is a fight between lightweight champ Benson Henderson and featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Before the Korean Zombie replaced an injured Anthony Pettis at UFC 163, Aldo was on track to get a shot at the 155-pound belt should he have defeated "Showtime."

That may not stand now that the champ has a new opponent, but a potential fight with Henderson could be an interesting matchup down the line.

Another fight that "Smooth" could find himself in is a bout with the UFC's welterweight king.

Henderson, who's pretty big for a 155-pounder, has stated before that he'd be interested in facing St-Pierre and is closer in size to the Canadian than Silva.

If Henderson keeps cleaning out the lightweight division, a move up to 170 may be inevitable for him.

The last potential superfight that may still have legs is a battle between women's bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey and former Strikeforce women's featherweight champ Cyborg Santos.

The controversial Brazilian has had her troubles trying to strike a deal with the UFC, but a convincing win over Marloes Coenen at next week's Invicta FC card could bring her back to prominence in women's MMA.

Should Rousey take out Miesha Tate after their stint as coaches on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, a date with Santos could be in Rousey's future.

The time may have passed on any superfights involving Anderson Silva, but the UFC still has plenty of potential champion versus champion bouts that they can make.
