The Prospect on Every MLB Team Who Will One Day Be an All-Star
The 2013 All-Star Game is right around the corner, but one of the more interesting events of the weekend is the Futures Game.
Taking an early look at the MLB's top prospects is always exciting, and many of the players in this year's Futures Game will soon find themselves playing in the Midsummer Classic.
In the spirit of the All-Star Weekend festivities, let's take a look at the prospect from each team that will be an All-Star one day.
*All stats courtesy Baseball-Reference
Baltimore Orioles: RHP Dylan Bundy
1 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 20
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 195 pounds
Bats/Throws:ย S/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2011 (Owasso HS, Okla.)
Dylan Bundy has the potential to be a star at the next level. He has impressed scouts for years, and there's a good chance he'd already be in the MLB if he wasn't so injury plagued. Bundy hasn't pitched all year and won't throw a single pitch in 2013, due to his need to undergo Tommy John surgery, per USA Today.
However, assuming that he bounces back and returns to form, Bundy has the high-90s fastball and nasty changeup to fool big league hitters. He can go deep into games because of his effortless motion, and his maturity levels are off the charts.
This guy looks like a truly professional pitcher, and I fully expect to him to become a staple in the Mid-Summer Classic in a few years.
Boston Red Sox: SS Xander Bogaerts
2 of 30Position:ย SS
Age: 20
Height: 6โ3โย
Weight: 185
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย August 2009 (Aruba)
Xander Bogaerts has freakish power for a middle infielder, and he could conceivably be a 30-plus home run hitter in the MLB.
While he has the same vices as many power hitters (hits a lot of fly balls; strikes out too often), this kid is still young and has time to work out the kinks.
Coupling good defense with superior power, Bogaerts could be the next Troy Tulowitzki (although hopefully he won't suffer as many injuries).
New York Yankees: C Gary Sanchez
3 of 30Position:ย C
Age: 21
Height: 6โ2โ
Weight: 220 lbs
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย 2009, Dominican Republic
It's rare to find catchers who are as good at hitting as Gary Sanchez is. The young catcher has a terrific swing with excellent balance, and that is his greatest asset.
While his defense is still shaky behind the plate, Sanchez has a cannon for an arm and will be tough to run on at the next level.
He might not call a great game from behind the plate, but no matter where this kid plays he'll find his way into a starting lineup because of his bat. Expect him to be either a catcher, first baseman or DH in the future.
Tampa Bay Rays: RHP Taylor Guerrieri
4 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 20
Height: ย 6โ3โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2011 (Spring Valley HS, S.C.)
Taylor Guerrieri is still a few years away from playing in the pros, but there's not doubt that this kid has a ton of talent.
A tall, lanky starting pitcher, Guerrieri reminds me of a poor man's Clayton Kershaw. His fastball can hit 95-96 mph, and his curveball is just nasty. This combo is exactly what Kershaw uses to be so effective.
While Guerrieri might not be a Cy Young winner in the future like Kershaw is, he will almost certainly be an All-Star.
Toronto Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez
5 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 20
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 190
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (Barstow HS, Calif.)
Aaron Sanchez is still years away from the bigs. Don't get me wrong, the kid can flat out pitch. However, he is very raw.
His fastball can hit 97-98 mph, while his downward-breaking curve is just nasty. These are his two best pitches, but there's no doubt that he has a few other effective ones that will help him in the pros.
Sanchez could be pitching for Toronto in two or three years, and when he makes it up, it will be a short time until he is named an All-Star.
Chicago White Sox: RHP Erik Johnson
6 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 23
Height: 6โ3โ
Weight: 235
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed: Second round, 2011 (California HS, Calif.)
Erik Johnson is frighteningly big on the mound, and he is a hard-throwing righty who should strike fear into the hearts of hitters (and not just because he looks like he could throw them from shortstop to first).
After dominating the minors for his first two years, Johnson was recently promoted to Triple-A. In his first three starts he went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA, pitching better in Triple-A than expected. He's struck out 18 batters in 16 innings, completely overpowering hitters.
Johnson's progress has been remarkable, and it wouldn't be out of the question to see him be promoted late in 2013 or at the beginning of the 2014 season.
Cleveland Indians: SS Francisco Lindor
7 of 30Position:ย SS
Age: 19
Height: 5โ11โ
Weight: 175
Bats/Throws:ย S/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2011 (Montverde HS, Fla.)
Francisco Lindor is only 19, but he's already considered one of the top prospects in baseball.
This kid is a future Gold Glove winner. Bleacher Report's own Mike Rosenbaum describes Lindor as a "wizard in the field," and says he "does things at the position that no teenager should be able to do."
Lindor reminds me a bit of Derek Jeter in the way that he'll be a .300-hitter who plays superior defense, and he's a sure-fire All-Star.
Detroit Tigers: Of Nick Castellanos
8 of 30Position:ย OF
Age: 21
Height: ย 6โ4โ
Weight: 210
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (Archbishop McCarthy HS, Fla.)
Nick Castellanos is a fantastic hitter with a lot of potential. The 21-year-old was a first rounder out of high school and is on the verge of making it to the big leagues.
While he needs to stop chasing outside pitches and refine his approach at the plate a bit, Castellanos has great power and is comfortable going the other way. He has the power and swing to drive the ball for extra-base hits on a consistent basis.
While he started at third base, Castellanos was moved to the outfield so he can play in the bigs sooner, and it looked like he'll be playing for the Detroit Tigers by the end of the year.
Kansas City Royals: RHP Kyle Zimmer
9 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 21
Height: 6โ3โ
Weight: 215
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed: Firstย round, 2012 (San Francisco)
Kyle Zimmer was a first rounder in last year's MLB draft, hailing from the University of San Francisco.
Zimmer was nearly untouchable in Rookie Ball and Low-A, but since being promoted to High-A ball this year he has struggled, posting a 5.26 ERA through 16 starts.
This kid clearly has the stuff to be a big league pitcher, which is why he is considered a top prospect. It's going to take him a few years to make it to the bigs, but when he does he has the raw talent to play in the Mid-Summer Classic.
Minnesota Twins: 3B Miguel Sano
10 of 30Position:ย 3B
DOB:ย 5/11/1993 (Age: 20)
Height: 6โ3โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย October 2009 (Dominican Republic)
Miguel Sano is just one of many ridiculously talented prospects for the Minnesota Twins. I could've also put Byron Buxton, Eddie Rosario or Alex Meyer here, but Sano has the best chance of being a perennial All-Star.
Sano is already known as one of the best power-hitting prospects in all of baseball, and once he fills out his frame, he'll be even better.
This kid looks like he could be a 40-plus home run hitter in a few years, and after blasting 22 homers in just 79 games this year there are very few people who would question his ability to do so.
Houston Astros: SS Carlos Correa
11 of 30Position:ย SS
Age: 18
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 190
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2012 (PR Baseball Academy, P.R.)
The Houston Astros have the deepest farm system in baseball, and the MLB's worst team could ride future All-Stars like Mark Appel, Jonathan Singleton, George Springer and Carlos Correa to the postseason in three or four years.
Correa was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft at the age of 17. He excelled in Puerto Rico, and is currently batting .325 in Single-A in 2013.
With his rare combination of great baseball skill and freakish athleticism, Correa looks like a solid five-tool player. His power is above average for a middle infielder, and if he can continue to get the bat on the ball he'll be a star for sure.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 1B C.J. Cron
12 of 30Position: 1B
Age: 23
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 235 lbs
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted: First round, 2011 (Utah)
C.J. Cron came right out of Utah to play Rookie Ball, and he was sensational from the start, batting .308 with 13 home runs and 41 RBI in just 34 games.
Cron has been a monster at every level he's played at, batting .295 with 47 home runs and 219 RBI in 245 games in Rookie Ball, High-A and Double-A.
This kid is an RBI machine, and if he's as close to a sure-fire All-Star that there is.
Oakland Athletics: SS Addison Russell
13 of 30Position:ย SS
Age: 19
Height: 6โ0"
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2012 (Pace HS, Fla.)
Addison Russell is one of the top shortstop prospects in all of baseball, showing great athleticism in the field and the ability to drive the ball at the plate.
After dominating in the minors, Russell has proven that he's a terrific line drive hitter with above average power. He's also shown that he has terrific range in the field and a cannon for an arm.
He could be up with Oakland as soon as next season, and the world needs to be ready for his MLB debut.
Seattle Mariners: RHP Taijuan Walker
14 of 30Position: RHP
Age: 20
Height: 6โ4"
Weight: 210
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (Yucaipa HS, Cal.)
Taijuan Walker has progressed more in the last two years than some picks do in five.
Walker has been dominant since he first pitched in the minors, but last season he struggled after being promoted to Double-A, going 7-10 with a 4.69 ERA. However, he took the bats out of hitters' hands this season, posting an ERA of 2.46.
After being recently promoted to Triple-A Tacoma, he has posted a microscopic ERA of 0.56 in his first three starts. While he has some work to do before he's promoted, Walker looks like he'll be a stud in a few more years.
Texas Rangers: 3B Mike Olt
15 of 30Position: 3B
Age: 20
Height: 6โ2"
Weight: 210
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (UConn)
With Martin Perez at the MLB level already, the best prospect the Rangers have is Mike Olt.
Olt is one of the guys that I'm least certain about, but without Perez there might not be an All-Star in Texas' farm system.
While he has some power and can drive the ball, Olt is far from an elite prospect. He's going to be in the majors soon, but unless he can learn to hit on a more consistent basis, he won't be playing in the Mid-Summer Classic.
Atlanta Braves: RHP J.R. Graham
16 of 30Position: RHP
Age: 23
Height: 5โ10"
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย Fourth round, 2011 (Santa Clara)
J.R. Graham still hasn't pitched since May 13, but he remains the top prospect for the Braves, and the one with the best chance to be an All-Star.
Graham showed promise before being forced to rest, and if he comes back 100 percent healthy he has a bright future ahead of him.
While it's going to take him longer than the Braves would like, Graham is on track to be an All-Star one day.
Miami Marlins: Of Christian Yelich
17 of 30Position: OF
Age: 21
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws: L/R
Drafted/Signed: Firstย round, 2010 (West Lake HS, Cal.)
Christian Yelich has been all over the place, being promoted and demoted four times in four seasons. The one constant has been his success.
Yelich has been a solid hitter, batting .311 in his minor league career. He is a great contact hitter with solid power.
While he's more of a line drive hitter who won't be smacking too many balls over the fences, Yelich's power will follow and he'll be a great hitter near the top of the lineup in a couple of years.
New York Mets: C Travis D'Arnaud
18 of 30Position:ย C
Age: 24
Height: 6โ2โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2007 by Phillies (Lakewood HS, Calif.)
Travis D'Arnaud is the next great catcher for the Mets.
With great power, he looks like an above average hitter. He has improved in leaps and bounds on defense, and looks like an all around player now.
The Mets are hoping that D'Arnaud can be the next Mike Piazza, and while he might not be that good, he'll still be an All-Star.
Philadelphia Phillies: LHP Jesse Biddle
19 of 30Position:ย LHP
Age: 21
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 225
Bats/Throws:ย L/L
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (Germantown Friends HS, Penn.)
It's rare to find talented left-handed pitchers in the minors, and Jesse Biddle could be one of the best.
Biddle has shown that he can make hitters look foolish, getting them to watch strikes and swing at balls.
Biddle's curve has a sharp, downward break that looks like it's going to be difficult to hit at any level, and he could ride that pitch to a spot on the Phillies' roster next year.
Washington Nationals: 2B Anthony Rendon
20 of 30Position: 2B
Age: 23
Height: 6โ0โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2011 (Rice)
Anthony Rendon is getting some time in the MLB after Danny Espinosa hit the DL, but I still consider him a prospect since he'll be back down soon.
Batting .303 with three dingers and 12 RBI in 37 games, Rendon has impressed thus far. He has been surprisingly good, and once he continues to develop he'll be an All-Star for sure.
After making solid contact throughout his debut in the majors, Rendon looks like a future star.
Chicago Cubs: SS Javier Baez
21 of 30Position:ย SS
Age: 20
Height: 6โ0โ
Weight: 195
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2011 (Arlington Country Day School, Fla.)
Javier Baez is a terrific hitter, batting with great power and contact.
With a fast bat through the zone and a knack for getting the barrel on the ball, Baez has sown that he can blast the ball over the fence on a consistent basis.
While he's currently a middle infielder, Baez could find himself at third base soon if he puts on more strength, and he has the pop off the bat to be a corner infielder.
Cincinnati Reds: Of Billy Hamilton
22 of 30Position: OF
Age: 22
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 160
Bats/Throws:ย S/R
Drafted/Signed:ย Second round, 2009 (Taylorsville HS, Miss.)
Billy Hamilton is the type of guy who can bat leadoff for a club because of his ability to put the ball in play and his incredible speed to first base.
Hamilton can straight up fly around the bases. While he doesn't have a ton of power, he looks like the exact kind of guy any team would want at the top of the order.
With great speed comes great defense, and Hamilton is one of the best out in center too.
Milwaukee Brewers: RHP Tyler Thornburg
23 of 30Position:ย RHPย
Age: 24ย
Height: 5โ11โ
Weight: 190
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed: Third Round, 2010 (Charleston Southern)
Tyler Thornburg is barely a prospect, but he's still a prospect in my mind.
Thornburg has gotten some action with the Brewers this season, but it's been sporadic. However, he's still posted an ERA of 1.35 in 2013, thanks to his deceptive delivery.
Thornburg has been solid out of the pen, and his role with the Brewers remains unclear. However, he has the stuff to be successful as both a starter and a reliever.
Pittsburgh Pirates: RHP Jameson Taillon
24 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 21
Height: 6โ6โ
Weight: 235
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2010 (The Woodlands HS, Texas)
Jameson Taillon is so tall it's scary.
Batting against tall pitchers is never fun, and Taillon uses his huge frame and lanky arms to hide the ball well and generate power toward the plate.
With great velocity and movement on his pitches, Taillon is going to be tough to figure out in the bigs, and we could see this kid pitching in the majors next season.
St. Louis Cardinals: Of Oscar Taveras
25 of 30Position:ย OF
Age: 20
Height: 6โ2โ
Weight: 200
Bats/Throws:ย L/L
Drafted/Signed:ย November, 2008 (Dominican Republic)
Oscar Taveras is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, according to Bleacher Report's own prospect expert, Mike Rosenbaum.
With the ability to find the gaps at the plate and play all three outfield positions, Taveras has proven that he's a talented, valuable prospect.
Expect to see this kid in the bigs and making plays as soon as this season.
Arizona Diamondbacks: RHP Archie Bradley
26 of 30Position:ย RHP
Age: 20
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 225
Bats/Throws:ย R/R
Drafted/Signed: First round, 2011 (Broken Arrow HS, Okla.)
Archie Bradley might not have the velocity to blow hitters away, but his breaking stuff is filthy, and he is a freak athlete.
After being recruited as a quarterback by Oklahoma, Bradley chose to play baseball and has made his mark. He has dominated Double-A ball this year, and will be in Triple-A soon. After that, it's on to the majors.
The Diamondbacks struck gold with Patrick Corbin, and now they're hoping to have two All-Star pitchers for the next few years once Bradley makes it to the bigs.
Colorado Rockies: RHP Jonathan Gray
27 of 30Position: RHP
Age: 21
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 239 lbs
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Signed: First round, 2013 (Oklahoma)
Jonathan Gray looks like he could have an incredible MLB career, and he very easily could've been drafted first overall in this year's MLB Draft.
Gray ended up being picked third, but the flamethrowing righty from Oklahoma has shown that he can hit 100 mph with ease, allowing him to utilize his velocity to fool hitters with his offspeed pitches.
Gray's game revolves around his power, but his breaking balls will have hitters buckling at the knees when they're expecting the heat.
Los Angeles Dodgers: INF Corey Seager
28 of 30Position: INF
Age: 19
Height: 6โ4โ
Weight: 215
Bats/Throws:ย L/R
Drafted/Signed:ย First round, 2012 (Northwest Cabarrus, N.C)
Corey Seager has sown the ability to play as either a middle infielder or a corner infielder, but he'll likely find himself on the left side of the field either way.
With good power and productivity at the plate, Seager could be a guy that the Dodgers rely on to knock in runs in a few years.
Seager is still very young at just 19 years old, but he could be MLB-ready by the age of 21. Look for him to be in L.A. in a couple of years.
San Diego Padres: C Austin Hedges
29 of 30Position: C
Age: 20
Height: 6โ1โ
Weight: 190
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Signed:ย Second round, 2011 (Junipero Serra Catholic HS, Cal.)
Austin Hedges has become one of the best up-and-coming catchers in baseball, thanks in large part to his success at the plate.
Hedges catches a good game and can calm pitchers down, but what makes him a future All-Star is that he couples his defense and understanding of the game with a solid bat.
While he might not have the power of Travis D'Arnaud, he is still an above average hitter as a catcher.
San Francisco Giants: RHP Clayton Blackburn
30 of 30Position: RHP
Age: 20
Height: 6โ3โ
Weight: 220
Bats/Throws: L/R
Drafted/Signed: Sixteenth round, 2011 (Junipero Serra Catholic HS, Cal.)
Clayton Blackburn has been solid in the minors to this point in his career, and he's the best hope the Giants have in their farm system.
Blackburn has posted a poor ERA, but has shown potential, as seen by his strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.22 and WHIP of 1.14.
He's still a few years away from the majors, but Blackburn could be a big hit by the time he gets their.
