UFC 162 Results: Full Winners and Analysis for Fight Card

Alex BallentineJul 6, 2013

A stacked fight card on Fourth of July weekend has become an unofficial UFC tradition. A tradition that continues in 2013 with UFC 162 featuring a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and hungry challenger Chris Weidman.

When: Saturday, July 6, at 10 p.m. ET (pay-per-view card)

Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas

Watch: Pay-Per-View (ordering information)

Live Stream: UFC.com

The main card isn't a one-fight wonder, either. Fans will be treated to an appearance from featherweight Frankie Edgar in his first non-title fight since 2009 as he'll be taking on 23-year-old Charles Oliveira in the co-main event.

The card also features a pair of Strikeforce imports making their UFC debuts against each other in Roger Gracie and Tim Kennedy, as well as the long-awaited return of Mark Munoz as he takes on Tim Boetsch.

With plenty of entertaining fighters on the card, the night of fights shouldn't disappoint, so check back here for results, grades and analysis for every fight and fighter on the main card as the night progresses.

Cub Swanson Defeats Dennis Siver

1 of 5

You can add Dennis Siver to Cub Swanson’s growing list of victims. The 29-year-old WEC veteran opened up the pay-per-view card with a bang as he picked up the victory over the German kickboxer via third-round stoppage.

Swanson has now extended his winning streak to five. Even in the crowded featherweight title picture, that’s going to be a difficult streak for Joe Silva and Dana White to ignore. As Damon Martin of Bleacher Report noted, Swanson just shows incredible progression from fight to fight:

"

The improvements of Cub Swanson over his last five fights is unreal. Serious contender at 145 now. #UFC162

— Damon Martin (@DamonMartin) July 7, 2013"

For Siver, the loss is a real setback. The longtime lightweight was 2-0 since making the drop down to 145 pounds and will now have to figure out if he can make a run at this class or go back up to 155.

Swanson Grade: B+

Swanson showed incredible resolve in this fight. Siver was able to dominate the first round after controlling the fight on the ground, but Swanson was able to recover. His striking looked crisp in Round 2 before he got the finish in the third.

Siver Grade: C-

Well, Siver did show that he has underrated ground skills—earning the nod in the first round with an impressive display of grappling on the mat. However, the 34-year-old slowed down considerably after that and was ultimately finished.

Mark Munoz Defeats Tim Boetsch in Return to Octagon

2 of 5

In one of the more evenly matched bouts on paper, Mark Munoz defeated Tim Boetsch via a one-sided unanimous decision after nearly a year outside of the Octagon. The win marks the first time Munoz has fought since his loss to Chris Weidman on July 11, 2012.

Before the loss to Weidman and eventual layoff from injury, Munoz was a top contender in the middleweight division. Now it appears he’s ready to climb the ladder once again.

Boetsch has now lost back-to-back bouts since going on a four-fight win streak that started in 2011 with a win over Kendall Grove. “The Barbarian” was tabbed as a surprise contender before being knocked out by Costa Philippou at UFC 155.

Munoz Grade: A

Munoz, 35, got off to a somewhat shaky start. Boetsch started off as the aggressor and appeared to be getting the better of him on the feet and mat. However, Munoz started to get into a rhythm by the second round, gaining the upper hand and flashing his impressive ground-and-pound he’s come to be known for.

The body shots that he delivered while in top control was the real difference.

Overall it was a great comeback performance for the Wrecking Machine.

Boetsch Grade: D

Boetsch didn’t get the win, but he had his moments. The 32-year-old started off well enough, really bringing the fight to Munoz and even outwrestling the former national champion. However, he eventually succumbed to vicious body shots from Munoz and faded as the fight wore on.

Tim Kennedy Defeats Roger Gracie in UFC Debut

3 of 5

Tim Kennedy became the latest Strikeforce import to earn a victory in his UFC debut. The Greg Jackson-trained middleweight earned the nod over fellow Strikeforce vet Roger Gracie in a fight that was void of a lot of action.

The fight might be Kennedy’s first win in the Octagon, but his skills have already been proved against some top-level competition. Kennedy earned wins over Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef during his time in Strikeforce while going all five rounds with Jacare Souza and Luke Rockhold.

After a disappointing start to his UFC career, Gracie will have to come out with a sense of urgency in his next bout to avoid an 0-2 start in the organization. As Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report noted, Gracie landed just 16 punches in the entire three-round fight.

"

Gracie landed just 16 punches in that fight. 16.

— Jeremy Botter (@jeremybotter) July 7, 2013"

Kennedy Grade: B-

It took Kennedy a while to get things going; the 33-year-old did himself no favors in the first round as Gracie got the upper hand. He did redeem himself as the fight wore on. He was accurate with his striking, earned some top control himself in the second round and wore down his opponent.

It wasn’t the most thrilling performance, but he got the job done.

Gracie Grade: D-

Gracie, 31, showed right away why he’s dangerous in the Octagon—he’s a chip off of the old Gracie grappling block.

He consistently tied up and took down Kennedy in the early going. However, much like his opponent Kennedy, his performance became less impressive as the fight wore on. This fight didn’t offer much in the way of excitement and Gracie didn’t do much to make waves with his debut.

Frankie Edgar Defeats Charles Oliveira in Co-Main Event

4 of 5

It took a serious step down in competition, but former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar finally got back in the win column. “The Answer” snapped a three-fight skid by coming through on his heavily favored status against the young Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision.

The fight marked the first time that Edgar fought in a non-title bout since 2009 when he defeated Matt Veach at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale.

He may need a few more wins before re-entering the title picture at featherweight, but this was certainly a step in the right direction for the fan favorite.

For Oliveira, this is a disappointing loss, but not a crushing one. The 23-year-old now has nine fights in the Octagon and can add experience against a former world champion to his resume. He has plenty of time to make the most of his career.

Edgar Grade: B

Edgar utilized his great technical boxing from the beginning as we’ve come to expect from the former lightweight champion. The 31-year-old consistently landed crisp combinations in the stand-up department. His takedowns were generally on point as he was able to work his wrestling in when necessary.

However, The Answer struggled to really separate himself from Oliveira. A big favorite coming in, this wasn’t the dominant performance that everyone expected.

Oliveira Grade: B-

"Do Bronx" has nothing to be ashamed of with his effort here. This wasn't a fight that anyone expected him to win, but he still had his moments and really impressed with his improved stand-up. If he can build off of this loss, he could be making noise in the division sooner rather than later.

Chris Weidman Stuns Anderson Silva to Win UFC Middleweight Championship

5 of 5

For the first time since 2006, the UFC has new middleweight champion—and his name is Chris Weidman. The 29-year-old stunned the world by knocking out the longtime middleweight champion.

While many UFC fighters felt Weidman had the tools to finally dethrone Anderson Silva, it was a feat that had to be seen to be believed. Turns out, Weidman was just the man for the job as he tamed “The Spider” to move his record to a perfect 10-0 and etched his name into the history books forever as the first man to defeat Silva inside the Octagon.

The loss is a blow to the legacy of Silva. Much like Fedor Emelianenko before him, so much of his reputation hinged on the aura of invincibility that shrouded the longtime champion. Now, the 38-year-old looks more mortal than ever.

This was a career-defining win for Weidman, and he’ll likely get a shot at enhancing his legacy even further with a rematch against the former champion.

Weidman Grade: A+

It doesn't get better than beating Anderson Silva. The Spider has long been considered the greatest fighter in the world, and Weidman shocked the world by defeating the seemingly invincible Silva. As ESPN Stats & Info notes, no one has ever knocked out Silva, so Weidman's win is historic in more ways than one.

"

Chris Weidman beats Anderson Silva by TKO. It's the first time Silva has been knocked out in his career.

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) July 7, 2013"

Silva Grade: D+

Silva may be considered the greatest fighter of all time, but he certainly didn't do anything to show it Saturday night. He was taken down in the first round and appeared to be more interested in taunting Weidman than doing any actual damage. Silva fighting with his hands down is nothing new, Weidman was just the first to make him pay.
