Chelsea Transfer News: Loaning Marko Marin Was a Brilliant Move for Blues

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2018

Sending Marko Marin on loan to Sevilla was a great piece of business for Chelsea.

The club confirmed the news on its official website. It makes sense as the 24-year-old winger has failed to gain a foothold at Chelsea, and the possibility of that happening in the future was drastically reduced after the Blues added Andre Schurrle.

This is the kind of move that helps everybody involved.

Chelsea has been very smart in terms of allowing players who need first-team football to leave on loan. Although doing that with Michael Essien may not have been the best of ideas, young players like Thibaut Courtois, Kevin de Bruyne, Josh McEachran and Romelu Lukaku have all thrived after getting loaned out.

It should be much the same with Marin.

This is a player who's recorded 44 assists and 12 goals in 124 Bundesliga matches. When healthy, the German winger's a very good creator out wide.

At this point in his career, though, Marin needs to be playing regular first-team football. These are the years when footballers generally make the biggest jump in their careers. In a few years, Marin will be at about his peak as a player. In order to make the most of that peak, the player has to be a consistent starter.

He's not going to be that at Chelsea in the upcoming season. At Sevilla, Marin has a much better chance of getting in the starting XI, especially as the club is dealing with the transfer of Jesus Navas to Manchester City.

La Liga will also be about the most optimal league for a player like Marin. It would allow him to shed the label of being a player who can only succeed in Germany. The league itself will also cater to Marin, as it's less physical than the Premier League. That's a great fit for somebody who's had to deal with multiple injuries over the past couple of seasons.

European football expert Andy Brassell laid out what is on the line for Marin.

The winger has a lot of work to do in order to show that he's no longer a player with potential and rather a player who's followed through on his promise. Marin is going to be very motivated to prove himself at Sevilla.

That's only good news for Chelsea.

If he plays very well, the Blues will be welcoming back a very talented player who's only beginning to enter the peak of his career. They could slot him in and make him a key cog in the attack.

However, with the likes of Schurrle, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Kevin de Bruyne—all of whom can play at left wing—already in the squad, Chelsea might feel the need to profit off of the player. If Marin has a good season, the Blues would have no trouble moving him on to another club for a nice fee.

That's a stark contrast to Chelsea's present situation with the player.

If the club wanted to sell Marin this summer, it would have almost no bargaining power. Everybody would know that he had no future in the club. Even worse, he'd be coming off what has been two lackluster seasons.

By playing well at Sevilla, the demand for him could go sky high.

While he may not have a future at Chelsea, this loan will ensure Marin at least has a great future somewhere.
