Mother Nature Makes Her Presence Felt
The U.S. Open kicked off in grand fashion Thursday morning with several marquee players taking the course early, but was soon halted (8:36 a.m. ET) when the imminent weather started to make its way to Merion Golf Course.
According to Weather.com, Merion Golf Club and the surrounding Ardmore area are in the path of a huge storm front hitting the east coast. Not only is the storm dumping rain on the area, but the thunderstorms throughout the storm cell are also expected to last several hours.
The radar is ominous for the rest of the day, and with the official forecast calling for rain and storms through the remainder of the morning and into the afternoon, the likelihood that the players will get much golf in Thursday is low.
Ian Poulter’s Hot Start
There wasn’t much golf played before Mother Nature rolled into Southeastern Pennsylvania, but the elite play of tour veteran Ian Poulter through the first three holes of the tournament was the highlight of Day 1's early action.
Before play was suspended, Poulter was already three-under par and looking as solid as any player on the leaderboard thus far.
With the course playing into the favor of the players that struggle in their intermediate game, Poulter was able to use his tee abilities and short game to put himself in an amazing position when play once again commences.
Poulter was a long shot this week, but the elite play to start Day 1 should be a good sign moving through the rest of Round 1—whenever that will be.
