2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship: Top Rising Stars to Watch on Big Stage

Jun 8, 2018

With just five games left in the UEFA European U-21 Championship before we see a champion declared in the 2013 tournament, the time is now for rising stars to make a name for themselves.

The international tournament provides clubs and fans with a look at some of the premier young talent throughout all of Europe.

While these players do not see the opportunity to shine all that often on the big stage, the best have the chance to show that they deserve consideration from the best clubs in the world.

The first four days of the tournament have seen plenty of young players step up, but the final days of the tournament will provide the real test. Elite players have a way of showing up in the biggest games.

These young prospects have what it takes to become the star of the tournament by leading their team to the championship.

Leroy Fer, Netherlands

Fer just had a potential move to Everton derailed by a knee injury according to The Guardian, but it certainly doesn't look like the knee has slowed him down in this tournament. He's been the most dangerous threat offensively for the Dutch.

He's one of just four players to have already scored twice in the tournament phase and he's done that while only playing 25 minutes. He also notched an assist in his short time on the pitch.

A tough matchup against Spain is up next for the Dutch as they try to win Group B.

If Fer can prove his worth as a finisher again in the Netherlands' remaining games, it will become increasingly difficult for FC Twente to keep him around.

Ricardo, Spain

Playing the part of Fer's counterpart on Spain will be Ricardo. The Brazilian-born striker has yet to score in the tournament phase, but he was a star for the Spanish side during the qualifying stage. He scored 11 goals in nine appearances.

The 22-year-old forward only managed 11 goals in 39 appearances for Benfica this season, but on the international stage, he should see more opportunities to score.

Expect his scoreless streak in the tournament stage to end soon. He's too talented to be kept out of the scoring column for long.

Andrea Bertolacci, Italy

Italy has already secured a spot in the semifinals of the tournament and their rugged defense has been the primary reason for that. The Italians have given up just one goal in three tournament-phase games.

However, Bertolacci has been one of the offensive revelations for the Italian side. His versatility makes him a valuable asset as he is able to pass with efficiency and finish when given the opportunity.

He scored a clutch equalizer in Italy's game against Norway deep into stoppage time in the second half.
