Spain vs. Haiti: Date, Time, TV Info and Preview

Mike ChiariJun 4, 2018

Spain will continue to tune up for World Cup qualifiers as well as the Confederations Cup on Saturday when it takes on Haiti in a friendly at SunLife Stadium in Miami, Fla. The level of competition may not be great for La Roja, but simply getting on the pitch is important.

While it may be tough for Spain to get up for this match, as Haiti is clearly an inferior opponent, the venue should help in that regard. It isn't often that Miami plays host to international soccer events, so the fans should be extremely excited to see the defending World Cup champions in action.

Spain figures to have its full allotment of stars, including the likes of Gerard Pique, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and many more. It will essentially be the same team that seeks back-to-back World Cup victories next year, so it should make for a great atmosphere.

As for Haiti, this match will provide a measuring stick to see how far the squad has come. Staying within a few goals would be a huge accomplishment for Haiti, but the team should have plenty of support regardless due to Miami's sizable Haitian population.

Most importantly, some proceeds from the ticket sales will go to Project Phoenix, which was set up to provide aid to Haiti as it continues to recover from the 2010 earthquake, according to Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald.

Spain and Haiti obviously have very different goals heading into this match, but at least a very worthy cause will ultimately benefit. Also, the people of Miami are in store for an exciting brand of soccer as Spain's best players will look to be banging on all cylinders in anticipation of some huge international matches moving forward.

Spain Player to Watch: Andres Iniesta

It's difficult to single out any Spanish player as being more important than the others when, literally, any one can step up in any give match, but midfielder Andres Iniesta is one of the squad's most consistent players. While Iniesta isn't a huge goal scorer, he is more than capable of putting the ball in the back of the net, as he scored the World Cup-winning goal for Spain against Netherlands in 2010.

With that said, Iniesta is far more skilled as a distributor and that makes him extremely valuable. Iniesta had 22 assists across all levels of competition during the 2012-13 season, so Haiti is well aware of his ability to set up teammates. Iniesta is also extremely motivated to win the upcoming Confederations Cup, according to Goal.com, so look for him to be very focused on Saturday despite the friendly nature of the match.

If Iniesta plays well, then Spain is almost guaranteed to turn in a fine overall performance. He has a knack for finding his teammates in dangerous scoring positions, and Spain boasts players who don't often squander opportunities. Spain's attack runs through Iniesta more often than not, so he is definitely the player to watch during this match.

Haiti Player to Watch: Johnny Placide

It's no secret that Haiti isn't exactly stacked with top-level talent, but the team does feature some players who have had success across the world. One such player is goalkeeper Johnny Placide.

After playing several years with Le Havre AC of the French Ligue 2, Placide made the move to Stade de Reims of the French Ligue 1 recently. Although Ligue 1 doesn't quite measure up to the EPL or La Liga, it offers a high level of competition and it should be great for the development of the 25-year-old goalkeeper.

Placide, who was actually born in France, was once part of the French under-21 team. He decided to make the switch to Haiti, however, and it can be argued that he is Haiti's biggest star. Placide will be a key player for the Haitians on Saturday, as he is the last line of defense. Even if he plays the game of his life, it is tough to envision Haiti winning or drawing this match, but he can definitely keep the score respectable.

No matter how well Haiti's back line plays, Spain is going to come up with some golden scoring chances. Placide won't be able to stop them all, but if he makes some timely saves and doesn't get rattled by Spain's constant pressure, Haiti could come away from this match feeling very good about its performance.

Matchup to Watch: Spain Attack vs. Haiti Defense and Goalkeeping

The main matchup that figures to be front and center for the entirety of this contest is Spain's highly skilled attack against Haiti's over-matched defense and goalkeeping. While Haiti does possess some experienced defenders as well as a solid goalkeeper in Placide, the Spanish team is unlike anything Haiti has ever seen. Spain has waves of skilled strikers and midfielders who can score from pretty much anywhere on the pitch, so Haiti will be under siege from the moment the opening whistle blows.

Haiti isn't going to shut out Spain, but it can limit the damage by playing confident defensively. That means the Haitian defenders can't scramble and forget the fundamentals when Spain is bearing down on them. They have to make the simple plays and do anything possible to keep Spain from scoring. If that means kicking the ball out of bounds or kicking it the length of the field, then that is what Haiti needs to do.

Trying to play a pretty match won't do anything for Haiti because Spain does that better than anyone. Haiti's only hope to keep things close is to play a gritty, physical, defensive-minded match. Spain may be compelled to make stylish plays since it's a friendly match, but it's important to remember that the Confederations Cup is approaching. Spain ought to treat this like any other match, and La Roja shouldn't have any issue if it does that.

Prediction

Haiti will likely be energized by the Miami crowd and by the caliber of opponent that it will be playing, but that can only take a team so far. The talent disparity between Spain and Haiti is immense, so look for Spain to eventually outclass the Haitians. With that said, the score will remain somewhat respectable, as Spain is unlikely to embarrass Haiti in this type of setting.

Spain 5, Haiti 0
