Gregg Popovich's Seeks 'Happiness' in Air Force Yearbook Entry
Gregg Popovich, never short with a sneer nor quick with a smile, was once a fresh-faced, frowning young man graduating from the Air Force Academy, with dreams of happiness in his future.
I'd say he's landed some mixed results thus far.
Off the court, he's been married for nearly three decades, has two kids and loves a good glass of wine, and I'm sure all of those things make him happy.
But Popovich, at least the Popovich we know, is an angry, brooding man who is constantly surly with the media.
The only time he seems relatively happy is when his team has won a big game, or when he's making the rare joke or two.
That's why it's so surprising to see him as a young graduate back in 1970, putting together a cheesy quote for the Air Force Academy yearbook.
"He came to these nondescript hills from Merrillville, Indiana with his ways and his ball. Ball has continued to capture Popo's time during his visit at the Academy. What he did while here may have been bad and it may have been good, but he learned it did not matter much either way. He has, however, learned much about life during his revealing stay, and some profess that it was due not totally to fine associations and tutelage. His future plans include happiness.
"
His future plans include happiness, eh? Well it seems to me that he's picked the wrong profession, or he's at the very least doing a great job veiling his exuberance.
More than his eternal quest for happiness, most interesting is two other pieces of info from his yearbook bio.
It's stated that whether he was bad or good didn't really matter, which is definitely not the way he coaches.
However, most shocking is that his nickname was "Popo."
No wonder the dude is so upset all the time, we've been calling him Pop for all these years when his actual nickname is Popo.
It's time we all apologize, which I'm sure will make him a much cheerier fella. At the very least, it's more fun to say.
