Stock Up, Stock Down for Orioles Top 10 Prospects for Week of May 20

Drew ReynoldsJun 5, 2018

The Baltimore Orioles took their fans by surprise this week as they promoted one of their top pitching prospects, Kevin Gausman, to the majors.

While that was the focal point of last week, the other top prospects in the Orioles organization continued to play on. Well, half of them did. The other half either got injured or were already on the disabled list.

Here's this week's updated on the Orioles' top 10 prospects.

Ranking based on MLB.com's ranking of Orioles' prospects.

10. Glynn Davis

1 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: OF

2013 Stats: .236 AVG, 2 HR, 19 RBI, 20 R

Last Week's Stats: 1 G, 1-3

After missing missing much of the previous week due to an injury, Glynn Davis left midway through his return game on Tuesday and currently finds himself back on the disabled list.

While his RBI and run totals have improved from previous seasons, the Maryland native has been pretty mediocre so far in 2013. If he's going to improve, he has to get back on the field.

9. Mike Wright

2 of 10

Team: Double-A Bowie

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 6-0, 10 GS, 3.61 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 51/19 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 2 GS, 1-0, 11.0 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 9 H, 6 BB, 13 K

After picking up his sixth straight win on Tuesday, Mike Wright's streak ended on Sunday, as he got a no-decision.

The 23-year-old was slightly off on Tuesday, despite picking up his sixth win, as he allowed six hits and four walks in only five innings. However, he only allowed two runs and the Baysox won easily, 13-2.

Wright was better on Sunday, until a forgettable sixth inning that included a grand slam. Still, the righty ended with a solid line (6 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 8 K) and continues to be one of the most impressive pitchers in the organization.

8. Branden Kline

3 of 10

Team: Single-A Delmarva

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 1-2, 7 GS, 5.86 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 32/14 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: DNP

As reported by A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, Branden Kline will miss six to eight weeks after having surgery on his right leg. A tweet from Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun explains the injury:

"

Kline's injury was a freak one. Heard he was doing conditioning drills and rolled his ankle. #Orioles

— Eduardo A. Encina (@EddieInTheYard) May 24, 2013

"

It's an unfortunate injury for last year's second-round pick, especially since he was coming off his best outing of the season in which he struck out 13. But the 21-year-old should pitch again this season.

7. Xavier Avery

4 of 10

Team: Triple-A Norfolk

Position: OF

2013 Stats: .278 AVG, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 36 R (between Double-A and Triple-A)

Last Week's Stats: 2-20, 1 R, 2 SB

With Danny Valencia's promotion to the majors, a spot opened up for Xavier Avery in Triple-A. However, he has not run off with the opportunity.

He has earned four walks in his 24 plate appearances since his promotion to Triple-A, but only two singles in the other 20 appearances is far from impressive.

Avery's promotion also coincides with the Tides' recent slump, as they have a 1-5 record since his arrival. Obviously it's not all Avery's fault the team is struggling, but it's still a ugly stat.

Stock: Down

6. L.J. Hoes

5 of 10

Team: Triple-A Norfolk

Position: OF

2013 Stats: .301 AVG, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 28 R

Last Week's Stats: 6-23, .261 AVG, 4 R

The Norfolk Tides only scored 15 runs all of last week, so the fact the L.J. Hoes had a bit of a rough week, having no RBI or extra-base hits, isn't all that surprising.

Still, Hoes managed to get six hits and score over a quarter of the team's runs.

The 23-year-old has been one of the brightest stars in the minors for the Orioles this season. And his "rough" week is a good week for others. A trip to the majors should be in his foreseeable future.

5. Nick Delmonico

6 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: 3B/1B

2013 Stats: .333 AVG, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R

Last Week's Stats: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Delmonico was only able to play one game last week before he was removed from the game for a pinch runner.

A bad hamstring had Delmonico on the DL earlier this month, and while he's currently active, his hamstring is probably the culprit for his lack of playing time.

The sixth-round pick from 2011 was impressive in his only game of the week, but staying on the field would be nice.

4. Jonathan Schoop

7 of 10

Team: Triple-A Norfolk

Position: 2B/SS/3B

2013 Stats: .268 AVG, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 12 R

Last Week's Stats: DNP

The Orioles' top hitting prospect had another setback this week, as his lower back strain turned out to be a stress fracture. A tweet from Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun broke the news:

"

Schoop has a stress fracture in back. Likely wok (sic) need 6 to 8 weeks of rest.Meet w a doc for 2nd opinion.

— Dan Connolly (@danconnollysun) May 22, 2013

"

Schoop was playing well before his injury. Hopefully he plays just as well on his return.

3. Eduardo Rodriguez

8 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 5-2, 9 GS, 3.32 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 46/17 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 1 GS, W, 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 4 K

The 20-year-old Venezuelan was very good in his lone start of the week on Sunday, going seven strong innings in the Keys' 8-1 victory.

The left-handed Rodriguez continues to impress as he's been very consistent so far in 2013, having only one bad outing. He'll likely stay in Frederick for the foreseeable future and could have his innings limited near the end of the season.

Stock: Up

2. Kevin Gausman

9 of 10

Team: Baltimore Orioles

Position: SP

2013 Minor League Stats: 2-4, 8 GS, 3.11 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 49/5 K/BB

Last Week's Stats / Major League Stats: 1 GS, L, 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 5 K

Kevin Gausman took the loss in his Major League debut on Thursday. However, the outing was more positive than negative.

After three very strong innings, Gausman allowed two in the fourth and two more on a J.P. Arencibia homer in the fifth. While four runs in five innings isn't fantastic, the 22-year-old looked like he belong and wasn't phased by the spotlight.

With the Orioles' rotation still flailing, Gausman will continue to receive starts for the time being. His next start will come on Tuesday against the Nationals.

Stock: Up

1. Dylan Bundy

10 of 10

Team: Double-A Bowie

Position: SP

2013 Stats: Unavailable

Last Week's Stats: Unavailable

All the news has been positive on Dylan Bundy's recovery from elbow and shoulder stiffness. A tweet from Eduardo A. Encina mentions that the phenom is pain free:

"

Good news on #Orioles top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy, who tested full range of motion without pain today after PRP injection on April 29.

— Eduardo A. Encina (@EddieInTheYard) May 24, 2013"

Also according to Encina, Buck Showalter stated that Bundy may be able to start throwing by June 10, which would be right on schedule.
