Masters Weather 2013: Rain Will Create an Ugly Day 2 at Augusta
According to AccuWeather.com, there will be thunderstorms and rain from midnight to 10 a.m. EDT in Augusta, Ga. For those unfamiliar, Augusta is the hosting city of the Masters Tournament.
These horrendous weather conditions will create an ugly Day 2 at Augusta.
The first round was all about the birdies, as Sergio Garcia and Marc Leishman are tied at six under par. They aren't alone in their success, as Dustin Johnson went five under, and six players rest at four under par.
Twelve players finished at 69 or better.
With that being established, Day 2 won't be as forgiving.
During the opening round of play, the golfers at the Masters were graced with clear weather and manageable winds. Shots were landing where they were supposed to, and the grounds were the perfect texture.
It's fair to assume golfers won't be so lucky in the second round.
With more powerful gusts will come the need to hit tee shots at different elevations and angles. Those who fail to comply will find their balls off of the fairways.
Mother Nature can be cruel, especially at golf tournaments.
This may seem like an irrelevant piece of information, but it's rather important for the upcoming rounds of play: More than 30 golfers averaged upward of 300.0 yards per tee shot during the first round (via Masters.com).
That's a major reason we saw 14 eagles and 297 birdies in Round 1.
In Round 2, however, the winds could play a more significant role. Not only will the gusts carry balls to unplanned areas, but they also will plant golfers in something worse than the rough—wet areas in the rough.
With all of this rain, the course crew will have minimal time to groom the holes for action.
Rather than a smooth course and favorable winds, the weather will present an uphill battle to golfers with early tee times. The placement shots that fell into place in Round 1 will not in Round 2, and putting will emerge as a primary form of salvation.
Those who fail to convert will plummet—and it's all because of the weather.
