Making the Call on Packers' 5 Toughest Offseason Decisions
The Green Bay Packers face a tough offseason following their second straight year of exiting the playoffs in the divisional round. There could be plenty of faces heading out of Green Bay with an influx of new guys coming through the door.
With some of the decisions that need to be made, this could be a very different Packers team next year. Free agency and the draft should fill the holes left by players leaving and bring in even more youthful talent to compete on both sides of the ball.
Jermichael Finley
1 of 5Decision: Kept on Roster
With Greg Jennings and Donald Driver off the team, that should open things up for Jermichael Finley to be a bigger piece of the offense. Finley does have a fairly expensive contract and is due around $8 million in 2013. Despite the price tag, the Packers should keep the talkative tight end.
Finley hasn't been the player the Packers hoped he would become, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. He's responded well coming off his knee injury and shown flashes of brilliance. He does need to figure out when he should and shouldn't talk and certain topics to avoid.
Charles Woodson
2 of 5Decision: Cut
Charles Woodson gave the Packers a big boost in their first playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. He didn't have the same type of impact against the San Francisco 49ers. While Woodson still has some quality to offer, he's not worth the around $9 million price tag.
It will be sad to see one of the Packers' biggest leaders and faces of the 2010 season off the team, but unless he takes a pay cut, he's just not worth the money. Casey Hayward's emergence at the slot corner position makes it even harder to justify bringing Woodson back in 2013.
Mason Crosby
3 of 5Decision: Camp Competition
Mason Crosby certainly had his struggles throughout the season. He made every Packers fan uneasy when he attempted a field goal during the second half of the year. He should be back in Green Bay at least at the start of training camp.
The Packers should pick up a kicker somewhere in the offseason and bring him into camp. Crosby deserves a shot to earn back confidence in him, but the Packers need a back-up plan in case his struggles continue into early next year.
Dom Capers
4 of 5Decision: Kept on Coaching Staff
After the Packers gave up 45 points in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Dom Capers' name has been brought up as a possible change the Packers could make. The defense improved tremendously this season from last year but at times still made too many mistakes and played fundamentally unsound football.
The lack of adjustments in the playoff loss is the most concerning aspect of Capers' coaching. While the Packers should keep him on board with the young talent they have, Capers' seat should certainly be heating up. Next season will decide whether Capers has a long-term job with the Packers.
Greg Jennings and Donald Driver
5 of 5Decision: Not Re-Signed
Greg Jennings and Donald Driver won't be back with the team in 2013. The Packers should let both of them walk and find employment elsewhere. Jennings will likely look for a large payday before he turns 30 in September and Driver will likely need to find a place to end his career.
It's hard to see both of these players go, but it's business for the Packers. Jennings would cost too much to keep, and Driver simply isn't good enough to have an impact. While these two will be walking in the offseason, they deserve a ton of credit for what they've given to the Green Bay community.
