WWE Labor Day: The 10 Best Jobbers in Today's Company

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

Today is every American's favorite holiday. Labor Day is one of the few holidays every year that just about everyone gets a day off of work. It's hard to work on Labor Day, which is a holiday literally built upon taking a break. Do not let the ironic name of the holiday fool you. If you work on labor day, you're probably doing the jobs that most people don't want to do and deserve all the credit in the world for just that.

In the WWE world, everyone would theoretically have off for Labor Day except for those unsung heroes. That won't be the case, since tonight's three-hour RAW will be hyping Night of Champions and WWE Champion CM Punk in his home town of Chicago. Still, those unsung heroes are known in wrestling circles as jobbers.

Those are the guys that barely win and make the big stars look good. Their face time is slim, but they are around to perform the good deed and be an valuable asset to the company. It sure is fitting, but even jobbers do their job on Labor Day. In the long history of wrestlers who enhance the winning streaks of others, today's crop of jobbers to the stars are sure doing them proud. Here are 10 of the best around right now.

10) Camacho

1 of 10

Camacho doesn't get a lot of chances, but the guy is massive and has a lot of talent. At the side of Hunico, Camacho has a place on the roster and some relevance. He even got onto a YouTube pre-show for a pay-per-view. Who saw that one coming?

Camacho can be one of those guys who gets repackaged and gets to be on the other side of those squash matches one of these days. For now, Camacho seldom wrestles and wins even more rarely. The potential is there, so do not sleep on Camacho. He is simply paying his dues early.

9) Trent Barreta

2 of 10

There haven't been many mentions or sightings of Trent Barreta in quite some time. The question of "Where's Trent?" is seen more frequently than Barreta himself. Many are just counting the days before Barreta is given the pink slip finally, but the talent he has is unmistakable. Just look back at his matches on Superstars, even if they feel so long ago.

Barreta is a small and nimble guy that can make any man feel like they have the strength of Ryback or the technical prowess of Damien Sandow. He is a jobber's dream and if he had been healthy, he would be higher on this list.

Hopefully, he returns eventually and does what he does best: loses. He also busts dudes or something, whatever that means.

8) JTG

3 of 10

Yes, he is still employed.

JTG has been a backstage critic of WWE, but did not get fired over it. Even before that, many weren't sure why he was still with WWE long after his tag team partner, Shad Gaspard, was gone.

JTG has a different look and actually does work hard in the ring. He is all charisma and has that ability to come across as a heel within moments of a squash match. While the nameless jobbers of Ryback needed promos before the match, JTG just needs a minute to spark the boos.

There are a few reasons why JTG is still employed and one reason he is getting paid right now: he spoke up. That may also be a reason that he gets fired soon, but that is the life of a WWE jobber. While he is still around, he is "Just Too Good" to be off this list.

7) Zack Ryder

4 of 10

Woo woo woo him all you want, but Zack Ryder is still a jobber. He may win more than your average jobber should, but Ryder is still an enhancement talent. Ryder got his push, fell on his face and cannot get back there again. His Internet stock has made him relevant to fans, but his lack of selling tickets when he is rising up the card doesn't work in WWE.

Buy all his merchandise, but if you don't buy him as a relevant superstar, he's gonna keep getting his face fist pumped. The simple truth is that his popularity through his hit YouTube show all stemmed from him being not liked and making fun of himself.

Ryder being popular and supposedly being good goes against everything he used to get himself noticed. It sounds crazy, but until Ryder tweaks his character, most of the W's for Ryder in the future will be his "Woo's."

6) Drew McIntyre

5 of 10

Remember when Drew McIntyre was a big deal? So does he. It seems like every few months, WWE remembers too, dusts him off for a few TV appearances and the hint of a rise in relevancy again, only to put him back on the bench and move on without him.

McIntyre is a future main-event talent, even by WWE's own admission. His gimmick not too long ago was being hand-picked by Mr. McMahon. The Chosen One hasn't done a whole lot since.

He gets cheered at live events, which get drowned out to keep him looking like a heel. His offense is just as brutal as a newcomer like Antonio Cesaro. So what is the issue?

A lot of it comes from McIntyre serving punishments from his ex-wife, former Diva Tiffany. McIntyre walks on a tighter leash because of her transgressions and seems to still be feeling the punishment from it. Eventually, his hard time will be over and the virtue of patience will be rewarded for this Scotsman.

5) Alex Riley

6 of 10

Alex Riley was exactly what WWE wanted us to love about the second NXT season. Kaval won the season and Michael McGillicutty was the runner-up, but Riley really shined. He stuck on the roster with The Miz, had a short feud with The Awesome One after a few months, and was not heard from very much after that.

Every so often, you swear that Alex Riley is going to get into a feud of some kind, but that never comes to be the truth.

Riley is a raw talent with a repackaging in his future, if they can figure one out for him. He is mostly charisma and power, a lot like David Otunga. Otunga's gimmick change did wonders for him. It's Riley's turn.

4) Curt Hawkins

7 of 10

Even without his partner Tyler Reks, Curt Hawkins is among the best and most-used jobbers in WWE. Need to make someone look good? Send in Hawkins. Need a warm body to get thrown around for four minutes? Hawkins is your man. Hawkins is WWE's equivalent to a long reliever in a baseball bullpen. Hawkins just eats up innings or, in his case, losses.

Hawkins isn't your prototypical future star and many argue that he isn't much different than The Miz around the time he was in the ECW brand. Still, Hawkins has been around for years and he is content with his place.

He may have one more tag team push left in him. All he needs is a new partner. All of his former partners either leave, get fired or become Internet sensations.

3) Jack Swagger

8 of 10

This is the only former World champion on the list and for good reason. Jack Swagger was given the world by WWE as they showcased their first major star out of the FCW developmental program.

Swagger was given a lot at a young age and his abilities never grew with him. His in-ring offense took some time and his charisma is only now coming along. What do they do with a great amateur wrestler that was given world titles?

They throw him out to the ring almost every week and have him lose. Swagger loses more than anyone in WWE this year and it all seems to be building to something. One of these weeks will be that final straw for The All-American American, but it is all about counting lights on the ceiling until then for Swagger.

2) Hunico

9 of 10

I mentioned Camacho before, but Hunico is just in another class. He doesn't get as many matches, but he also doesn't get a lot of wins. In my mind, he is still a jobber and a good one at that.

What makes me really commend Hunico was carving this situation for himself out of a messy one in the Sin Cara saga from a year ago. He was at a dead end in FCW before this call up helped give Hunico a purpose on the main roster.

From a Sin Cara impersonator to his own gimmick, Hunico has transitioned well. He's already 35 and isn't the young stud many wished he was. Still, Hunico can enjoy a few years in WWE with a gimmick that seemed to be tailor-made for him.

Many thought Sin Cara would find a way to losing his job before Hunico would. Ultimately, he may end up with the better career, even as a jobber. His ability can make anyone look good and he always has that potential for the next level.

1) Heath Slater

10 of 10

He's clearly one of the most valuable assets for WWE right now. More and more people seem to be agreeing with that notion. Heath Slater has so much charisma that you either love the over-the top antics or think he is trying too hard. That's exactly the point. Slater's offense is very good and planned out. His streak of losing to legends really showed his abilities.

Most people don't realize that being a jobber, especially when jobbing to a legend, means that you need to be in charge of a lot of the moves. Slater was a big part of the success with matches against such men as Vader, Sid and Rikishi.

Slater made Lita feel like she had never left WWE years before. Slater moving up the card may actually be a bad thing. It would hurt jobber matches. Try and find me a better jobber in WWE today, but you can keep looking. Heath Slater puts in some of the best work in the entire company.
