Norwich City: 11 Things Learned from Spurs Draw

James KentJun 7, 2018

Norwich City can be very proud of their performance during the 1-1 draw with the Spurs. Many people felt this was an even more impressive performance than when they won 2-1 last season at White Hart Lane.

There are certainly some things to highlight from the game and look at how these might have an impact as the season goes on. The Canaries are certainly starting to play very well and that first win must be just around the corner.

A Commanding Midfield Performance from Bradley Johnson

1 of 11

I thought that Bradley Johnson was back to his very best against the Spurs. As Norwich City fans, we have seen some great performances from Johnson, but not always on a consistent basis. However, if Johnson keeps playing this well, then Tettey and others will struggle to get a game.

It was a shame that he couldn't get him name on the scoresheet, because that would have capped off a truly awesome performance.

Robert Snodgrass Was Our Most Potent Attacking Weapon

2 of 11

Snodgrass had a fine game against QPR last week, but I thought he took his performance to a whole new level against the Spurs. He was always a danger to the Spurs defense and caused them many problems. His late equaliser was the least he and Norwich City deserved.

The Defense Is Looking Better with Each Game

Last season, Norwich let in way too many goals, and fans must have been fearing the worst after the opening day 5-0 defeat against Fulham. However, the team has responded superbly since then and there are now hopes of being a solid outfit this season.

The back line of Garrido, Basson, Barnett and Russell Martin seems to be working pretty well at the moment. Leon Barnett has been given a new lease of life, and I have to admit that he and Bassong look like a pretty solid partnership.

The Wes Hoolahan Question

4 of 11

The Norwich City midfield looks pretty good at the moment, but I know many Norwich City fans would like to see Hoolahan involved in some way. It has been a slight surprise that he has not been utilized as a substitute.

However, when we signed Jonny Howson I did feel that Hoolahan's chances would be limited. The summer arrival of Jacob Butterfield cannot be good news for the Irishman either. It might be a bit early to suggest that Hughton doesn't fancy him. But there are clearly players ahead of him at the moment, and Hughton doesn't seem to value his contribution from the bench.

Grant Holt Is Getting Better

5 of 11

Grant Holt still hasn't scored this season, but I thought his performance against the Spurs was much improved. He is beginning to get back the sharpness that will soon see him opening his Premier League account.

This is certainly a good sign, and his setup for Snodgrass shows that he isn't just concerned with scoring goals himself. Nevertheless, let's hope he scores his first goal against West Ham.

An Encouraging Cameo Role from Steve Morison

6 of 11

I think as Norwich City fans, we all know that Steve Morison sometimes looks more interested than other times. When he came on against Spurs, he looked very sharp and ready to impress.

He seemed to have a very good claim for a penalty as well as causing other problems. Let's hope we see more of the same from the Welshman.

Chris Martin No Longer in the Manager's Plans?

7 of 11

I think it was curious to see Chris Martin excluded from the squad against Spurs, especially after he appeared as a sub in the last game. It will be interesting to see if Martin is a candidate to go out on loan when the loan window reopens.

An Awesome Team Performance

8 of 11

Although, I have singled out a few individuals for praise, I wanted to point out that I thought the whole team was excellent throughout the match. Every player seemed to work well together and I felt this togetherness played a major role in the result and the performance.

Are Norwich City Clinical Enough?

9 of 11

I thought Norwich put together a near complete first-half performance, but the one thing that it was missing was a goal. And we know that in Premier League football, it's vital to score when you are on top, because it only takes the top sides a second to score. The way Norwich had been playing in the match, they should not have been the ones chasing a late leveler.

So, if there is one area to improve,  then it's the ability to score when on top.

Norwich City Can Pass as Well as Anyone in the Premier League

10 of 11

Anyone that thinks Swansea are the only team that can pass the ball needs to watch the first half against the Spurs, because Norwich played some quite delightful stuff at times. This especially applies to those supporters who seem to think the Canaries play direct football.

Fans Will Be Nervous Until That First Win Arrives

11 of 11

Chris Hughton will be painfully aware that his team must win games to stay in the Premier League. So it's vital that first win arrives sooner rather than later. The Canaries still need to prove that they can win under Hughton and that they can score more than one goal in a game.

Nevertheless, the club is moving in the right direction and they should be able to win against some of the lesser teams in the league.
