Why Tim Tebow Gives New York Jets No Choice but to Lean on Mark Sanchez

Gary DavenportAug 27, 2012

The quarterback controversy that many expected to develop with the New York Jets when the team traded for quarterback Tim Tebow has yet to materialize, despite Gang Green's best efforts to create one by fielding the preseason's most pitiful offense.

Through three exhibition games the Jets have yet to score a touchdown on offense, a feat of futility that no team has accomplished in 35 years according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.

The Jets, for their part, appear to looking at the glass as half full (of tequila, because I think they're drunk), with wide receiver Santonio Holmes telling Cimini that "I honestly don't think we have anything to be frustrated about." and quarterback Mark Sanchez quipping that "The way I see it, we're saving all of our good stuff for the regular season."

Sanchez must be, because he hasn't displayed much of it in the preseason, posting a passer rating of under 60 in each of his last two starts.

Sanchez, of course, has an explanation for these struggles, and not surprisingly that reason isn't him but dropped passes by his receivers.

"

"I know we can make plays out on the edge," he said, referring to his receivers. "We have the talent and the playmakers to do that, but unfortunately tonight we didn't execute to the best of our ability. That's the way it goes some nights, but we'll bring Stephen along, we'll shake the rust off [Holmes] and get ready for the regular season. That's when those guys come alive and make a play," he said. "The good ones come alive and make a play."

"

Um, try putting the ball on target, Mark. I've heard that helps.

These offensive struggles would have been the perfect opportunity for the Jets' newest acquisition under center to come in and work a little "Tebow Time" magic, but while Tebow has been his usual mobile self running the ball, his passing may actually have gotten worse.

Yes, believe it or not, that's apparently possible.

For the preseason Tebow has completed 13 of 36 attempts (yep, you read that right) for 151 yards, with two interceptions, and has been sacked six times.

Granted, the sacks aren't entirely Tebow's fault, as the New York offensive line has been terrible, so much so that the team benched right turnstile (I mean tackle) Wayne Hunter before their loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Still, 13-of-36 is the best thing to happen to Mark Sanchez's job security since Peyton Manning balked at the idea of playing in the Big Apple.

For his part, captain accuracy also thinks the the Jets' offense will be fine when they face the Buffalo Bills on September 9th, as Tebow told The Associated Press via The Washington Post that “I think when the season gets here and we’re game-planning and show more stuff, I think it’ll be a pretty good offense.”

If there's one thing you can be sure of, it's that for good or bad that offense is going to be led by Mark Sanchez, because Tebow hasn't left the Jets much choice with his play on the field.

But you just keep looking at that glass as half-full Timmy.

Although I wouldn't have taken you for a tequila kind of guy.
