2012 Summer Olympics: Top Events You Can't Miss
Michael Phelps is done swimming. So what is left to watch in these 2012 Olympic Games?
Well, there is quite a bit, including a ton of Team USA action that carries medal implications, featuring athletes we've grown to love.
If you were looking for something to tide you over until the closing ceremonies, I can tell you just what to look out for and when to watch it.
With men's hoops, women's soccer, beach volleyball and the fastest man in the world, there's plenty of compelling action left in the 2012 London Games.
Track and Field: Men's 200-Meter Final
1 of 6Arguably the world's greatest natural athlete takes the track Thursday, in what many believe is his most dominant event: the 200-meter dash.
After dominating his qualifying heat with a time of 20.38 seconds, Bolt is essentially a lock for the gold medal. Despite a few strong competitors, including fellow countryman Yohan Blake, the odds of Bolt giving up his throne are slim to none.
The Jamaican sprinter is the current world record holder in the event after the 19.19 second blur he posted at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin.
While Bolt's is the lone individual event on this list, it is sure to be the most intense of any of the others because if you blink, you just might miss it.
But I'll help you out on that front. The men's 200-meter final is on Thursday, August 9, at 3:55 p.m. ET.
Track and Field: Men's 4x100-Meter Relay Final
2 of 6Like Usain Bolt's chances in the 200-meter final, the Jamaican sprinting team holds similar expectations for their 400-meter relay team. These guys are scary fast.
Two men that are likely to race this Saturday night, Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt, finished first and second in the 100-meter dash Sunday.
We'll see if any of the other teams have the spikes to compete with the Jamaican foursome.
For good measure, check out the posted video to see exactly what the other seven lanes have to go up against.
The men's 4x100-meter relay is on Saturday, August 11, at 4 p.m. ET.
Men's Basketball
3 of 6Considering all the banter about the Olympics most polarizing team, you knew this one was going to be on here..
Whether you think this year's rendition of Team USA Basketball measures up against the legendary teams of the past, they're still a super talented squad that is better than any other in the field.
I'm going to assume that they will make the gold medal game but am not yet ready to pronounce an opponent.
People will watch this final simply to see what Team USA has in store and whether or not they will live up to their astronomical expectations.
My guess is they will.
The gold medal game for men's basketball is Sunday, August 12, at 10 a.m. ET.
Women's Beach Volleyball
4 of 6With two American teams still in the competition how could you not be intrigued with women's beach volleyball.
Both semifinals are Tuesday with the American duo of Misty May-Traenor and Kerri Walsh Jennings pinned against the Chinese team of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi. The other American team, April Ross and Jen Kessy, will take on Brazil's Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Silva.
Neither men's team is left standing, so it's only appropriate that we turn our attention to the women's side. With any luck, both American teams will face off against each other for a gold medal.
The gold medal match for women's beach volleyball is Wednesday, August 8th at 4 p.m. ET.
Women's Soccer
5 of 6Seriously, if you've missed what the United States has done in women's soccer thus far in the Olympics, it's time that you remove yourself from the rock you've been living under.
These women have been incredible and made that known to the entire world last night with their incredible extra time victory against Canada.
This gold medal game is easily one of the best in the entire Olympic Games, considering it's a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final between the United States and defending champion Japan.
We've become amazed at how good this team truly is and we've witnessed forward Alex Morgan become America's sweetheart at the same time.
For real though, Alex, call me.
The gold medal match for women's soccer is Thursday, August 9, at 2:45 p.m. ET.
Men's and Women's Indoor Volleyball
6 of 6Both American teams performed very well in pool play and now it's time to see what they can do when it's all on the line.
I've always said to myself that I know the rules and I know generally how the game of volleyball is played but I still can't seem to wrap my head around how high these men and women can jump.
Seriously, it's incredible! It's like the floor is lined with invisible trampolines.
If you're looking to see some incredible athleticism and pinpoint strategy, check out the remaining volleyball matches, because both the men and women excel in each regard.
The final for women's indoor volleyball is Saturday, August 11, at 1:30 p.m. ET. The men go for gold Sunday, August 12, at 8 a.m. ET.
