L.A. Lakers: Will the Lakers Always Be the Premier Team in Los Angeles?
In a sports mecca like Los Angeles, winning is the most important element in solidifying yourself as a great team.
The Kings were finally able to bring a Stanley Cup to Tinseltown after 45 years, but they're still the little brother to the Dodgers and the Lakers in one of the world's most famous cities.
Despite the Kings' recent success and the Dodgers' scattered World Series championships since the 1950s, the Lakers are by far the alpha dog in the City of Angels.
Their 11 NBA championships since 1960 nearly doubles the amount of titles from the Dodgers, Kings and Angels combined.
The Lakers also have 24 members in the Hall of Fame, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson—two of the greatest players in NBA history.
The big-name players the Lakers have featured are some of the most prolific and worldly known athletes ever.
Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain are just a few of the greats to grace the floor of the Great Western Forum in Inglewood.
Though Hall of Famers come and go, any dynasty is based on continuous success. The main reason the Lakers rule L.A. is because of their ability to contend every season.
Where other historic franchises hit dry spells, the Lakers have been one of the most successful dynasties in the history of professional sports. Only four times in the last 52 years have the Lakers failed to reach the postseason.
That's once every 13 years.
Even their archrival Boston Celtics went six straight seasons in the 1990s without making the playoffs. The only time L.A. went back-to-back years without making the postseason was from 1974-76.
Simply put: The Lakers are one of those rare franchises that constantly breeds winners.
The Dodgers, despite winning five World Series in L.A., have endured their share of struggles.
Since coming to Los Angeles in 1958, they've gone seven straight seasons without making the postseason—twice.
Where the Dodgers have faltered, the Lakers have risen.
The purple and gold have reigned supreme in L.A. since 1960 and have proven year after year that they are always a favorite to win it all.
In the City of Angels, there really is no contest as to which team is the best.
