Ray Allen: Should Allen's Opt-out Clause Concern the Miami Heat?

Joshua CarrollJun 7, 2018

Many people are asking the question, “Should Ray Allen’s opt-out clause concern the Miami Heat?”

Well, I’m here to answer that question with a question of my own: “Why should it?”

The truth of the matter is that this sharpshooter is not going anywhere, and I'll tell you why.

Age

Allen is a somewhat one-dimensional sharpshooter on the downfall of his career. When it comes time to be faced with the decision of whether or not to opt out he will be pushing 40 years old.

Allen has developed a reputation as one of the players who takes care of his body better than most in the league.

But Father Time is undefeated and he’s creeping up real fast on one of the greatest shooters we have ever seen.

Legacy

It’s common knowledge in the NBA that the more teams you play on, the greater the chance you have to taint your legacy. (Someone should tell this to Dwight Howard.)

Think about it, what are the chances Allen opts to go start over in another city for one more year as his career winds down?

Many people would accuse Allen of ring chasing, due to the fact that he signed with the Miami Heat.

But what I saw was even more indicators pointing to the fact that Allen no longer felt welcomed in Boston.

With Pat Riley and Micky Arison, loyalty has never been a problem in Miami.

He Is Who We Think He Is

Don’t try and paint Allen as a villain now that he’s with Miami.

Would a villain take out an ad in the newspaper to thank the fanbase that now accuses him of being Judas Shuttlesworth? I think not.

Let’s take a look back at his career. He was extremely loyal to Milwaukee, a mediocre team, and played out his contract. Not once evoking a stir.

After the Sonics traded him, he played out his contract with Boston, despite trade rumors and never regaining his starting position on return from injury.

He’s been a grade-A type of guy since he entered the league, and I am firm believer that his commitment to Miami is one for the long run.

He’s Playing with the Heat

Ray Allen isn’t playing with just a bunch of Average Joes, aka the Charlotte Bobcats. If so, this opt-out ordeal would be much bigger.

Instead, He will be playing alongside Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, oh yeah, and that guy named LeBron James.

James, who is just now starting to play the best basketball of his career, makes things easier for his teammates on both ends of the floor. You’d have to think he had something to do with Allen choosing to take his talents to South Beach.

His job is real simple with the Heat: Knock down open shots. Being that he is one of the greatest shooters the league has ever seen, why would he leave the easiest job he’s ever had?

Where Would He Go?

Is there any other place tailor made for Ray Allen like Miami is? I surely do not know of one.

Where else can he play with two of the best slashers and passers in the NBA?

Sure, you could say he would fit in with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but they already have James Harden.

The Heat have nobody who can do what Allen can, at the level he does it.

Let me tell you this, there is no way Allen goes back to Boston after their falling out, so Boston fans, go ahead and get that fantasy out of your head.

Allen will not find a better place to end his career. I mean, who wouldn’t want to retire in Miami?
