Jeremy Lin: Houston Rockets Atone for Previous Mistakes by Reacquiring Star PG
The Houston Rockets have officially inked Jeremy Lin to a three-year, $25 million deal, according the CBS Sports, completing a circle that started when the team initially claimed the PG off waivers in December of 2011.
GM Daryl Morey made the rather easy decision to cut the then-unproven player after less than two weeks. The team already had guaranteed money going to Kyle Lowry, Jonny Flynn and Goran Dragic and needed a roster spot for veteran center Samuel Dalembert.
The Knicks put in a claim for Lin a few days later and then earned a chance for some serious playing time in early February.
Obviously, you know by now that the 23-year-old made the most of those minutes and officially kicked-started “Linsanity,” which earned him that massive contract this offseason.
By offering Lin—a restricted free agent—such a significant amount of money, Morey proved that his wisdom far outweighs his pride.
The GM knew that he made a mistake by cutting the NBA’s newest superstar and was able to be the bigger man in the situation.
He even acknowledged his failure to recognize Lin’s talent.
"We should have kept Jeremy Lin," Morey wrote on his Twitter back in February. "Did not know he was this good.Anyone (sic) who says they knew [is] misleading you... Really happy Jeremy Lin. Very hard working, nice, & humble. He has a great, great future."
It’s unlikely that Morey ever thought his team had a chance to be a major part of Lin’s “great, great future” back when he wrote that, but he is clearly ecstatic at this juncture.
The Rockets were not going to let Lin get away twice, and Morey tweeted that the team “plans to hang on this time.”
If Lin lives up to his incredible play last season, Houston will have made a wise decision to reacquire the young point guard this summer and will have made amends with their mistake to cut him.
