NBA Rumors: John Lucas III and Players Miami Heat Must Add

Stephen BabbJun 7, 2018

Good is never good enough in the NBA.

Nor even is greatness.

The 2012 NBA Champion Miami Heat have already proven plenty to the world, but there's still unfinished business. As long as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are teamed together, the pressure will be on this organization to do everything within its power to field the best possible roster.

Without the cap space to add prime talent and Ray Allen already using up the taxpayer's mid-level exception, the Heat will be forced to rely upon players willing to play for the veteran's minimum salary.

Fortunately, there are a few guys willing to do just that when you're talking about the defending champs.

Here are some rumored options along with some guys who wouldn't be bad fits.

John Lucas III

There's a lot to like about Lucas' game, and the Heat know that as well as anyone.

The 29-year-old scored 24 points against Miami in March, when the Chicago Bulls pulled off a shocking victory that made everyone forget about Derrick Rose for a moment.

Lucas is small, even by point guard standards, but he can certainly shoot with the best of them.

He might be shooting for Miami before too long, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst:

"

Heat interested in free agent PG John Lucas III, sources tell ESPN. Story will be posted soon.

Miami already has some decent point guard options in Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole, but Lucas would provide some depth and a scoring option capable of causing a lot of damage when he gets hot.

Kwame Brown

Joking?

Not in the least.

Brown isn't worth a big payday, but he can still play a useful role in this league, especially on the defensive end. He's the kind of guy the team has missed inside the paint, unless you're impressed with Joel Anthony's occasional contributions.

Whereas Anthony will swat a few shots, Brown is bigger and can use his size to guard the post.

Against guys like Roy Hibbert, that could come in handy.

Derek Fisher

Why not add another stop to Derek Fisher's tour of title contenders?

He showed that he could still have some solid stretches with the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, and there's no reason he couldn't do the same with the Miami Heat.

If John Lucas doesn't come to town, Fisher would be an intriguing Plan B. This club already has enough veterans, but the upshot is that Fish is the kind of guy who instantly understands his place on a team like that.

Kenyon Martin

Kenyon Martin isn't the perfect solution to what the Miami Heat need in the paint, but he's still a great defender who could give LeBron James and Chris Bosh spots of rest.

His energy and grit have long defined a game that has lost something to age and knee injury.

After a stint in China, Martin played out the rest of last season with the Los Angeles Clippers.

He might now be looking for a more prominent role than the one he'd find in Miami, but if winning is his objective, that could always change.
