The Biggest Media Misconceptions About the Dallas Cowboys

Jason HenryJun 7, 2018

Because the Dallas Cowboys are the NFL’s most popular franchise, there are often misconceptions surrounding the team’s reputation and acclaim.

Dallas was the toast of the NFL back in the '90s, as they won three Super Bowls. But since the team’s last Super Bowl win in 1995, they have struggled to find on-the-field success.

As long as Jerry Jones owns and operates the Dallas Cowboys, this team will forever have attention and popularity surrounding it.

Motoring through the offseason and slowly walking our way toward training camp, I believe we should clear up a few misconceptions about the team.

Tony Romo Is Reason for Team’s Playoff Failures

1 of 5

This will give Cowboys fans a reason to gloat: Former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer said that Romo is better than Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Toomer bases his argument on stats alone, and in that sense, he is correct. The difference between Romo and Manning are the Super Bowl rings.

Romo tossed over 30 touchdowns last season and had just 10 interceptions. He is the last of the Cowboys' concerns and Dallas wouldn’t have the limited amount of success that they do without his leadership and hard work.

Dallas Made a Mistake in Drafting Dez Bryant

2 of 5

Bryant will be one of the best receivers in the league before it's all said and done. He has the skill and ability, and it's just a matter of him maturing and growing within the Cowboys offense.

The reason for many to say that Bryant may be a mistake is due to his off-the-field issues. Nothing major besides some un-paid bills and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Dallas would be silly to let him go or trade him.

Jones won't because he recognizes the talent in Bryant.

The Cowboys Drafted Badly in 2012

I'll admit that I am not the biggest fan of the Cowboys' troop of rookie players for 2012 because they failed to address a few areas, but Jones was able to grab corner Morris Claiborne and linebacker Kyle Wilber.

Those two players will be difference makers for the Cowboys on the defensive side of the ball.

Dallas got a lucky haul last year with running back DeMarco Murray and linebacker Bruce Carter. This year, it was a board of little known players and one potential home run.

Jason Garrett Has Bad Playcalling

4 of 5

Many fans, including myself, have taken issue with Garrett's playcalling skills. He can over-reach, allow too much of his ego to enter into playcalling and fails to use his most talented players to their full potential.

I say that with full disclosure as I am nowhere near an expert, former NFL player or coach and have no basis, besides my untrained eye and the scoreboard, to arrive at this conclusion.

As Romo threw for 30-something odd touchdowns and DeMarco Murray was well on his way to 1,000 yards, the Cowboys were losing, again, and his ability as a head coach was questioned.

He will continue to grow and the team will do so with him.

The Cowboys Are Overrated

5 of 5

This last one is simplistic yet prolific. The Dallas Cowboys are far from overrated, as they are always within reach for a division title.

Anytime with Tony Romo, Miles Austin and Dez Bryant should actually overachieve instead of the opposite.

The evidence that I use is Romo and his numbers and the Cowboys' ability to score. The team's defense was lackluster at best last year and they had too many defensive inefficiencies to overcome.

Besides, with that much talent, many members of the media decide to pick the Cowboys to win it all every year on that fact alone. It is not that far of a reach to do so.
