Sources: Hakeem Olajuwon to Work with Knicks Forward Amar'e Stoudemire
In 2010, Hakeem Olajuwon worked one-on-one with Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard. You may recall that Howard's post-game had improved dramatically the following season. Well, it is being reported that Olajuwon will now work with Amar’e Stoudemire.
According to Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com, the NBA legend will fly to New York to train with Stoudemire, with the possibility of Knicks' center Tyson Chandler joining.
You may be wondering what this means for New York. Basically, it will develop Stoudemire’s low-post game, which was practically absent during all of the 2011-12 season. Looking in deeper, it could mean that the paint will be his new home—whereas he previously loved to take jumpers from the elbow.
Don't get me wrong, when Stoudemire's jumper is on, it's on. But developing a post-up game makes him more of a threat in the paint and therefore a more complete player. If he picks up Olajuwon's pointers quickly, he will be a threat and headache for opposing teams.
As Zwerling said in his article, "Stoudemire's future work with Olajuwon could signal Mike Woodson's coaching strategy to use him more in the low post." This is a brilliant idea because each player will know their designated role, resulting in a much smoother offense.
Let's hope that Olajuwon's previous success with other NBA players translates over to a successful Amar'e Stoudemire—and a more competitive power forward.
