Deron Williams Rumors: Star PG Would Be Wise to Heed Dirk Nowitzki's Sales Pitch
Most likely, Deron Williams will choose to stay with the Nets. That seems to be the consensus.
He likes New York, he doesn't want to uproot his family and there's that small factor that the Nets are the team that can pay him the most.
But before he decides against Dallas once and for all—which the Mavericks imminently fear he's going to do—perhaps he should listen to what Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki had to say on KTCK Radio June 27.
The forward seems intent on making it known he wants D-Will with him in Dallas to embark upon another title run (transcribed by The Dallas Morning News):
"I'm anxious. We'd love to get D-Will [Deron Williams] in here. That's no secret. If you look at the league now, if you look at those top teams, they all have two or three playmakers you can hand the ball to and they do their thing. We just need to get better.
"
One year removed from their 2011 championship run, the Mavericks looked awful in the postseason this year, as the Western Conference champion Thunder swept them right out of the first round. With Williams—the top free agent on the market and one of the best point guards in the NBA—running the floor, the Mavericks can immediately compete in the West again.
Dallas had to fight its way to the No. 7 seed this season, and the road wasn't pretty. The failed Lamar Odom experiment seemed to sidetrack the team for the first three months of this strike-shortened season, and when they finally got to the playoffs, it became evident that they needed some youth—and proven talent—in the backcourt to complement Jason Kidd.
D-Will can easily solve that problem, and Nowitzki knows it. He has the talent to immediately give this team someone who can create offense with ease and efficiency, and he can immediately make the Mavericks dangerous again.
In case there was any doubt, Nowitzki made it clear that he, the leader of this team, wants D-Will. He told KTCK (via The Dallas Morning News):
"I hope we have a good shot. He’s from here. His mom lives here. He likes it here. He loves golf, and we have great golf courses. We have a great organization, great fans, and a great owner that makes stuff happen all the time.
"
D-Will is officially being courted—but there's one big, golden, diamond-encrusted reason why the Mavericks are the best suitor.
Williams recently told the Los Angeles Times that he's getting older and just wants to win sooner rather than later. There is no guarantee if he joins the Nets that they're going to give him the opportunity to win—and while Dallas can't guarantee anything, either, it is much, much closer to competing for a title than Brooklyn.
If Williams wants to play for a team that will have a terrific opportunity to build,—and build fast—there's no team that fits that description better than Mark Cuban's Mavericks.
The Nets may be able to offer Williams an extra year and $26 million more, but that won't be worth anything if Williams doesn't have a ring five years from now.
If a title is what he really wants, he knows what he has to do.
