WWE No Way Out 2012: Further Disgracing the Prestige of the World Titles

Chris FeatherstoneJun 7, 2018

For the WWE, 2012 has been centered around story lines that are as interesting as watching Tensai in the ring and John Cena overcoming odds.

Where does this leave the World Titles? Below every John Cena angle, which is unacceptable.

Neither of the World Titles have been the main event of a pay-per-view this entire year. Seemingly, No Way Out will continue this streak.

Yes, John Cena is the poster-boy for the WWE, but he is grossly overbooked and placed in main events that aren't needed.

Year in review of John Cena's main events (February-May):

February–Elimination Chamber

At the Elimination Chamber PPV, he battled Kane in an Ambulance Match. What makes this even worse is that it was a main event of a PPV with a different gimmick.

To this day, I don't understand this.

One could reason that he was gaining steam leading to WM 28, but I thought the most coveted prize was winning World Titles, not setting up good (or decent) story lines. Both of the World Titles were defended in Elimination Chamber matches, which were both better than the main event.

April–WrestleMania

This pay-per-view culminated the year-long feud between Cena and the Rock. While it (partially) made sense to have this as the main event due to the marketing and build-up, we could have done without it. Especially from the perspective of how the WHC was treated. Two words—18 seconds.

April (2)–Extreme Rules

This was a colossal match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar, wasted at a minor pay-per-view. Of course, this had to headline a PPV the caliber of Extreme Rules, but it could have been saved for a major PPV, giving a World Title an opportunity to be the main event.

The WWE and World Heavyweight Championship matches between CM Punk/Chris Jericho and Sheamus/Daniel Bryan, respectively, were much better than the whipping exhibition of Lesnar to Cena that ended with a chain strike.

May—Over the Limit

This was the worst PPV main event of the year and in recent PPV history. How predictable was this? Not only did we see an appalling match, but the vast majority of viewers were expecting Big Show to be involved. Both of the World Title matches were great. Either one of them would have been a suitable main event.

Instead, more John Cena.

June—No Way Out

From what it seems, this will continue John Cena's streak of non-title main events and further disgrace the prestige of the World Titles by not having one of them as a main event. A steel cage match between John Cena and the Big Show wouldn't be an anticipated main event, even if one of them had a World Title, notwithstanding neither of them having it.

Hopefully, the Money in the Bank PPV ends this absurd streak. Regardless, it has to end.

What are your thoughts on Cena's non-title main event streak? Does this affect the prestige of the World Titles?

Feel free to debate. As a reminder, comments that are not civil and respectful towards others will be flagged and reported.
