WWE No Way Out 2004: The Crowning Jewel Moment of Eddie Guerrero

Chris FeatherstoneJun 12, 2012

Eddie Guerrero is one of the greatest Superstars to ever step foot in a wrestling ring. After years of wrestling in other countries, teaming with the likes of Art Barr and The Great Sazuke, he finally got his break in the states in 1995.

Paul Heyman saw the potential and made him a member of the ECW roster. In his very first match for the company, he defeated two Cold Scorpio for the ECW TV Title. This was his first major title in the U.S. and the beginning of an amazing career.

After an epic feud with Dean Malenko, another promoter gained interest enough to bring Eddie on board—Eric Bischoff.

In WCW, Eddie achieved an above-average level of success, acquiring two Cruiserweight Championships and one United States Championship along the way.

Eddie was one of the upper mid-card level wrestlers involved in the feud against the nWo, often competing against Syxx (X-Pac, 1-2-3 Kid, The Lightning Kid, The Kid, 6-Pac, Sean Waltman—you get the point). His achievements in WCW sparked interest in another promoter—Vince McMahon.

It all began in the early part of 2000. Guerrero, along with fellow WCW wrestlers Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn and Chris Benoit, jumped ship to the WWE, forming a group named the Radicalz.

Although the group achieved a mild level of notoriety feuding with the New Age Outlaws, Guerrero and Benoit shined above the rest and embarked on their journey of successful singles careers.

2004 was the crowning jewel moment for Eddie Guerrero. After four years of battling in the mid-card, capturing the European and Intercontinental Championships, he won a No. 1 contender battle royal on an episode of SmackDown to face then-champion Brock Lesnar at the No Way Out PPV.

At No Way Out 2004, Guerrero reached the pinnacle of his career—something he worked hard for 17 years to achieve. In the proverbial "David versus Goliath" showdown, he defeated Brock Lesnar to win his first and only WWE Championship.

In November 2005, we lost Eddie Guerrero. However, heaven gained an amazing wrestler that will forever leave an indelible mark in the history of professional wrestling.
