Euro 2012: Wayne Rooney and His Biggest Question Marks at Tournament
Euro 2012 has now begun and we wait to see with interest how England will perform, starting with their first game against France on Monday.
The first two games are expected to be especially challenging because England will have to do without Wayne Rooney.
Everyone in England clearly hopes that the Manchester United forward will have an excellent tournament, but there are clear questions that will need to be answered at Euro 2012.
Will Rooney Be Match Fit?
1 of 5The league season has now finished so Wayne Rooney has not been getting regular games to keep him fit.
Roy Hodgson has clearly been using the warm-up games to work out how he is going to cope without the striker in the first two games.
Although, it should be noted, Rooney did get some match time in the recent game against Belgium.
Will Rooney Be Able to Hit the Ground Running?
2 of 5Leading on from this point on match fitness, it is likely Rooney will have to hit the ground running.
We all hope that England will win the first two games, but we know that football often doesn't work out like that.
Therefore, the Manchester United forward is likely to have to be at his best from the first minute he is on the pitch.
Will Rooney Be Able to Perform Under Pressure?
3 of 5It is obvious that the entire England side is built around Rooney. He would have gone even had he been suspended for three games.
But we have seen in the past that the pressure can get to him, so it remains to be seen if he can handle that pressure and perform well for England.
Will Rooney Perform Like He Does in the Premier League?
4 of 5Wayne Rooney has just had another fantastic season in the Premier League, scoring 27 league goals and setting up countless others.
This is the sort of form that England need to see from him at Euro 2012, but without Sir Alex Ferguson's motivation and his United teammates, will it work out so well?
Will Roy Hodgson's Tactics Suit Him?
5 of 5The early evidence of Roy Hodgson's England reign suggests that he will look to play a defensive game and catch teams on the break.
This will mean that Wayne Rooney will have a very important role to play; he will have to hold on to the ball and relieve pressure on his team.
But he will also know that he is going to get relatively few goal-scoring opportunities. This will not be the free-flowing attacking football that he is used to with Manchester United.
