10 Biggest Winners and Losers of New York Jets' OTAs, So Far

Ryan AlfieriJun 7, 2018

While no championships are won during OTAs, they still serve as a good indicator in terms of player roles and how rookies look going against veterans for the first time.

In addition, between the Tebow craziness and Darrelle Revis' contract situation, the Jets have a few added storylines in addition to on-field performances.

Here are 10 winners and losers from the Jets' OTAs.

Winner: Stephen Hill

1 of 10

Other than Tebow, few players are creating more buzz than rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill.

So far, according to ESPN New York's Rich Cimini, he has been working with the first team and looking good in the process. He burned Kyle Wilson on a deep route and made the catch in stride from a great pass from Mark Sanchez

Hill is also much better at getting off press coverage than Rex Ryan expected, which will expedite his transition to the pro game.

He is getting help from his former college teammate Demaryius Thomas, who had difficulty overcoming the same obstacles coming out of Georgia Tech.

The faster Hill can learn the position, the faster he can help rescue the erratic Jets passing attack.

Loser: Darrelle Revis

2 of 10

Revis continues to be wishy-washy on whether or not he will report for training camp or hold out.

The Jets have said that they expect Revis to be in attendance, but it is ultimately Revis' decision as to whether or not he tries to squeeze more money out of the Jets. Just the possibility of a Revis-less roster to start the season is sending Jets fans into a tither, especially on Twitter.

To me, this whole situation makes little sense. If Revis was going to hold out of training camp, why would he bother coming in for optional workouts? At the same time, it is hard to blame Revis for wanting to get as much money as he can while he is in the prime of his career.

Either way, until Revis checks into his dorm room in Cortland, NY, he will be surrounded with a lot of negativity.

Winner: Bart Scott

3 of 10

Well, here is one name we did not expect to see on this list a few months ago.

At one point, Scott was so displeased with his role on the team that he was granted permission to seek a trade. His age was starting to catch up with him as he struggled in coverage, making his bloated contract virtually untradeable.

Now, Scott is 12 pounds lighter and appears to be poised for a bounce-back season. Rex Ryan had plenty of praise for Scott in his press conference.

"

Two guys that I want to talk about first that I'm really excited about, [and] the guys you might not think about, but Bart Scott. I think Bart, he’s ready to be Bart Scott, the guy that we brought in here.

"

It's not often that you see a veteran linebacker make big strides in improvement, but Scott seems poised to do just that.

Loser: LaRon Landry

4 of 10

OTAs are technically voluntary, but those who choose to excessive their right to stay home are often scrutinized.

This year, the Jets are missing just two players from OTAs: Santonio Holmes and LaRon Landry. Holmes gets a pass because he was meeting troops in Germany, but Landry's absence is a bit more curious.

He is still rehabbing from a Achilles injury, which would limit what he could do on the field, but he could still attend meetings and start to learn the defensive playbook. Perhaps he has a good reason to skip workouts, but this is not an ideal start to his career in New York.

Holmes did return to OTAs on Thursday, meaning the Jets are now just one player short of full attendance.

Winner: Josh Brown

5 of 10

These two guys may be smiling in the picture, but make no mistake about it, they will be battling for employment this August.

While the job is Nick Folk''s to lose, Brown has looked very good so far in OTAs. Both players are experienced and have enjoyed some success in the NFL

If the competition is close, the Jets will probably give Folk the benefit of the doubt, but it is no lock for Folk to win the job.

Loser: Vladimir Ducasse

6 of 10

While the addition of two veteran offensive tackles last week speaks volumes about what the team truly thinks about Wayne Hunter, it is even more indicative about their lack of confidence in Vladimir Ducasse.

Ducasse came into this season as competition to Wayne Hunter for the starting right tackle job, but he is now being worked in at left guard, which is a clear indicator of how poorly he was doing at tackle.

Ducasse's scholarship has just about run out; I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility for him to not survive training camp cuts.

Winner: Muhammad Wilkerson

7 of 10

While the potential of Quinton Coples is garnering all of the attention, Muhammad Wilkerson appears to be a budding star of his own, at least in the eyes of Rex Ryan:

"

"This guy’s going to write his own ticket,” Ryan said of Wilkerson. “You see the jump he’s making. … Muhammad Wilkerson had a fine first year and he’s taken off from there. It’s exciting for a coach to see that.”

"

Unlike Coples, Wilkerson is a more "classic" 5-technique, which means he won't be used in as many exotic ways as Coples. While the Jets will probably rotate Mike DeVito and Coples this year, Wilkerson appears to have solidified his role in the defense as an every-down player.

If Wilkerson winds up being half as good Ryan seems to think he will be, the Jets are going to have quite a productive defensive line this season.

Loser: Sione Pouha

8 of 10

Don't worry, Pouha is not letting his new contract get to his head and coming into OTAs out of shape or anything.

The real loser here is Pouha's wallet. Usually, on most NFL teams, rookies are often tasked with paying the bill after taking their fellow linemen out to dinner.

The Jets are not like "most teams." Instead, the Jets make the oldest player on the defensive line pay the bill, which, in this case, happens to be Sione. The tradition started back in 2005, when Shaun Ellis saved Sione from the same fate.

The vets still made Coples sweat it out, making him think that he was going to be the one to take the tab the whole time.

Winner: Yeremiah Bell

9 of 10

When Bell was signed by the Jets, the moved was criticized because Bell is perceived to be an "in-the-box" safety.

So far, Bell keeps making plays on the ball despite all of the pre-conceived notions about him. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Bell "always seems to be making plays" and "might turn out to be a better acquisition than many predicted".

The Jets will need all of the added versatility they can get at the safety position, where they have more "in-the-box" guys that they need.

Loser: Jordan White

10 of 10

So far, there has not been much feedback as to who Jordan White has looked in OTAs and minicamp, but he did suffer a setback during the first OTA session when he fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

It was the same type of injury that the Giants' Hakeem Nicks suffered and should be back by the end of July and in time for training camp.

While the Jets have enough receiver depth to be perfectly fine without White, as a rookie, you want to get as much work in practicing against other pros as much as possible. Him missing the remainder of OTAs may set him back a bit.
