Paul Heyman's Twitter Diatribe in Its Entirety: A Blueprint for Wrestlers Today

Shane CombsJun 4, 2018

Last night, I was fortunate to sign on to Twitter at the exact time when Paul Heyman was going on a diatribe about whatโ€™s missing in the wrestling business and what it takes to truly succeed.

When it comes to wrestling, business and life, Paul Heyman has been there, done that and has the Twitter speech to prove it.

It was a timely message in that this week, WWE RAW Supershow scored a frightening 2.7 ratingย and the U.S.ย unemployment percentage went up this month.

What's Next For Chad Gable?

I know his words will apply to many in and outside the wrestling business.

It applies to me.

I am a would-be graduate student who was accepted into the top-ranked graduate writing program in the United States, but I did not get funding due to budget cuts. Now I wrestle with the decision to go elsewhere or wait another year.

And my 20s are basically behind me already.

It seems there is a lot of waiting in our lives, and a lot of manners, and a lot of hoping, and a lot of โ€œpaying duesโ€ until we are too old to capitalize on all those payments we made in youth.

In his tweets, Paul Heyman reached into the heart of what is wrong with wrestling (and beyond wrestling) today. My computer would not allow me to copy and paste his tweets, so I hand typed the entire message. That is how much I believe in his words. That is how necessary a message I believe it to be.

I just hope there are young and talented wrestlers who have read it and feel challenged.

Here it is for you, too.

Do with it what you will.

I look at some of these pics, and I realize how blessed I was in my career. Some guys have to wait forever for a lucky break/I managed @AustinIdolLive and Tommy Rich at the age of 21. Also the Orig. Midnights, which I got to do on @ESPN/Got to book Windy City at 22 years old. Eddie Gilbertโ€™s assistant booker at same age/Got to debut in WCW on TBS at 23 years old/So I was @JRsBBQ color commentator at 23 years old. NO ONE IS GIVEN THAT OPPORTUNITY IN TODAYโ€™S ENVIRONMENT/I will admit, with all modesty, I #Hustled my ass off, and GOT MYSELF the opportunity with ambition, politics, and pure assertiveness/Even โ€œdown periodsโ€ would give me the chance 2 work w/ people like Mean Mark. U know him as โ€œThe Undertakerโ€ @WWE/At 26, I managed @SteveAustinBSR, Rick Rude, Arn, Eaton, Zbyszkoโ€ฆThe Dangerous Alliance (didnโ€™t forget @Madusa_Rocks)/Iโ€™m working with these legends, these giants of the industry, these absolute top guys in my 20sโ€ฆ/In todayโ€™s system, most super talented people spend a great portion of their 20โ€™s just trying to make it onto the main rosterโ€ฆ/and yes, that has to changeโ€ฆ/I got to take over the creative of #ECW a week after my 28th birthday/By the time I became @JRsBBQ commentator on @RAW #WWE in 2001, I was 35 years old. STILL a โ€œkidโ€โ€ฆ/but I was already a veteran with decades in the business, and yet a 35 year old today would just be getting that chance/and working with @JRsBBQ on #RAW allowed me to commentate Wmania 17 and @SteveAustinBSR vs @TheRockโ€ฆ/By the time I worked with Brock Lesnar, which has become my best known managerial role, I was 36 years oldโ€ฆ/I look at some of these pics and videos #HustleTweeters send me, and I realize what an amazingly blessed career Iโ€™ve hadโ€ฆ/Iโ€™ve had more lucky breaks, more open doors, more perfect-storm-timing-opporutnities than anyone else Iโ€™ve known/These pics donโ€™t just remind me of โ€œaccomplishments,โ€ they remind me of what a lucky bastard Iโ€™ve been to be able to/work with these magnificent people, and play these roles, under these various circumstances/Iโ€™ve hit the lottery so many times, itโ€™s easy to just โ€œexpectโ€ the next opportunity, or get a sense of entitlement/But Iโ€™ve never felt entitled. Always blessed. Privileged. Lucky as all hell/And yet, I know how much hard work goes into it, and how you have to SCORE with your opportunities/The next generation in this (or any other business) doesnโ€™t just need to โ€œStep up,โ€ they need to โ€œStand Upโ€ and โ€œGet Noticed!โ€/Think it was easy for @CMPunk? Think it was easy for @WWEDanielBryan? They had to scratch and claw and fight for every/inch of turf they could pry away from the previous generation, who made them [explicit] earn it!!!/Itโ€™s not about backstabbing. Itโ€™s not about kissing ass. Itโ€™s not about pulling a hot stunt and getting momentary publicity/Itโ€™s about creating your own opportunity (like @SteveAustinBSR did with โ€œStone Coldโ€) and working harder than every1 else looking/for the big break, the next chance, the golden opportunity/This isnโ€™t a pep talk. Itโ€™s the lay of the land as I see it in todayโ€™s sports entertainment industry/I would have written a blog, but who knows if anyone will click on the link?/And while this may be a โ€œstream of consciousnessโ€ diatribe, itโ€™s a message to those who may be getting frustrated/a message to those who may be wondering โ€œwill I ever get that chance? that break? that opportunity?โ€/DONโ€™T WAIT FOR IT TO COME TO YOU! RELY ON YOURSELF!!!/Do you think @SteveAustinBSR relied on anyone? Did HHH? Did @TheRock? Did Hulk Hogan? Did @CMPunk?/With great humility, I ask you, did I? [explicit] NO! If there was no opportunity, I created my own, pushed my way in/manipulated the circumstances to beg, borrow, plead, blackmail, bribe, cajole, threatenโ€ฆand/or manufacture/All I wanted was a mic in my hand and a time frame in which I had to deliver my message. I knew I would score/Iโ€™ve seen it in this business for ages/I saw @ShawnMichaels go from tag team wrestler to greatest all around in-ring performer ever. Think it was easy for him?/I remember when Shawn and Marty were blackballed in the business, and could only work in Ala-[explicit]-bama/Think it didnโ€™t take @ShawnMichaels everything โ€œand then someโ€ to break out of the Rockers and get a chance as โ€œHBKโ€?/AMBITION. ASSERTIVENESSโ€ฆand the ABILITY TO BACK IT UP is what it takes to create the next generation of main eventers/The talent is there. The opportunity has never been more widespread. The need for new main eventers is readily apparent/โ€DOCILEโ€ and โ€œCOMPLACENTโ€ and โ€œHUMBLE TO A FAULTโ€ wonโ€™t cut it/While a dose of humility is always needed, that โ€œmain event confidenceโ€ is just as important/And itโ€™s time for the next group of superstars to stake their claim and create their own generation for others to follow/Peiod. Excla-[explicit]-mation point. The lecture is over. Pontification has ended. Hope Iโ€™ve been of help 2 ANYONE who follows this acct/and maybe even to someone who doesnโ€™t!

"

Just some final thoughts.

Shawn Michaels is known to have walked past the line leading to Vince McMahonโ€™s office and walked right in. Steve Austin bucked the system that was WWF. Chris Jericho was given time in WCW, but nobody cared what he did. Instead of being frustrated, he brought his own props, made his own gimmicks and launched himself into a career that is still going today.

Chris Jericho responded to Paul Heymanโ€™s tweets.

He wrote:

"

I agree with @HeymanHustle diatribe and I would like to add one more piece of advice. To really make it in this business/you have to be willing to take a chance. And if that pisses some people off than so be it!! Stop being so nice. Nice doesnโ€™t cut it.

"

How funny that he would say that at this particular juncture in his career. It is because the truth is the truth, and you only regret the chances you never take.

For the young stars like Dolph Ziggler or Dean Ambrose or someoneย we haveย yet to meet, they may never have a manager like Paul Heyman in the Dangerous Alliance.

But theyโ€™ve got the Paul Heyman tweets now.

Theyโ€™ve got the blueprint.

Theyโ€™ve now got fewer excuses.
