Carlos Mendoza Fired by Mets amid 34-47 Start, Andy Green Named Interim Manager

Julia StumbaughJun 26, 2026

Carlos Mendoza is out in Queens after one of the worst season starts in New York Mets history.

The Mets announced on Friday they are parting ways with their manager after a 34-47 start to the 2026 campaign.

Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the news.

Andy Green, who has worked in the Mets' front office since November 2023, will serve as interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Mendoza was in the middle of his third season with the Mets. He was signed through 2026 with a club option for 2027.

The Mets made it as far as the NL Championship Series during Mendoza's first season in 2024, which the club followed up with the offseason signing of star slugger Juan Soto.

Despite adding Soto to one of the most expensive rosters in MLB, however, the Mets went 83-79 and missed the postseason in 2025.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns responded to that underwhelming campaign with an offseason full of roster turnover that included parting ways with Pete Alonso, Edwin Díaz, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil.

The Mets replaced those players with newcomers featuring right-hander Freddy Peralta alongside Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco and Marcus Semien.

That new-look roster has yet to gel in 2026. Players including longtime Met Francisco Lindor visibly struggled with mental lapses on defense while the offense flagged in the injury absence of Soto.

Soto has been about the only bright spot on the team. He is hitting .299/.399/.567 and leads the club with 17 homers.

Mendoza's inability to help the roster bounce back in April from one of the longest losing streaks in franchise history may have ultimately contributed to Stearns' decision to make a managerial change.

Mendoza had served as the New York Yankees' bench coach before joining their cross-town rivals ahead of the 2024 season. He will now leave the Mets having led the club to a 206-199 overall regular-season record and a 7-6 mark in the postseason.

Only four MLB clubs have ever made the postseason after recording a 10-game losing streak in the same campaign, per MLB.com's Jared Greenspan. The Mets could be hoping Green is able to make history by helping this team recover from their early slump and find a way back into playoff contention in the NL.
