NBA Insiders Dish on Jaylen Brown Trade Rumors, Celtics' Asking Price After Failed Giannis Pursuit
Even though the Boston Celtics seem willing to trade Jaylen Brown, they are putting a high price on the five-time All-Star if they do move him.
Appearing on Friday's episode of Get Up, ESPN's Shams Charania explained there are some discussions that have seen the Celtics ask teams for "at least" four first-round draft picks in exchange for Brown.
The Celtics made Brown available in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, reportedly offering him along with two unprotected first-round picks to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Milwaukee wound up taking a different offer from the Miami Heat for Antetokounmpo, but that doesn't appear to have stopped the Celtics from continuing to explore the trade market for Brown.
Per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Jamal Collier, the Celtics remain engaged in discussions with other teams about Brown. There's also the issue of the toothpaste being out of the tube for Brown and the Celtics.
"It'd be insane for Boston to bring him back after dangling him so publicly," one league source told Shelburne and Collier.
However, that may not be as big of a concern as it might seem. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer noted the Celtics don't consider it "impossible" to reconcile their relationship with Brown, nor are they "aggressively" pursuing trades for him at this point.
Brown doesn't seem like he would too upset about leaving Boston if it ends up happening. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported the 29-year-old is "accepting" of the situation and is intrigued by the possibility of being the focal point for a team.
Even though Brown won MVP of the Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals during their run to the title two years ago, Jayson Tatum is the No. 1 option in Boston.
The issue facing the Celtics is there aren't a lot of teams with the kind of draft capital they are reportedly seeking and the cap flexibility to bring in Brown.
For instance, the Cleveland Cavaliers have popped up as a potential option for Brown if they were to include Evan Mobley in an offer. The Cavs don't control their first-round pick again until 2030, nor do they have much cap flexibility since they are in the second apron right now.
There are always ways for teams to figure things out if they really want to, but the Celtics also have to weigh the risks of breaking up a duo of Brown and Tatum that has been incredibly successful in nine seasons together.
