NBA Draft 2012: Six Teams Destined to Disappoint Their Fans

Eric VincentJun 7, 2018

The NBA Draft always comes with a high amount of excitement and anticipation from the fans. Everyone's excited to see who the next young player will be for their team, with hopes he'll pan out as the next big thing in the NBA.

With all that excitement sometimes comes disappointment. Whether from the player turning into a bust or the franchise making an unfavorable selection, it's just the nature of the NBA Draft.

A few prospects carry the "bust" potential, and some teams will make puzzling decisions resulting in an upset fan base.

Here are six teams who run the risk of creating that negative whirlwind.

1. Sacramento Kings

1 of 6

The Sacramento Kings have found success as far as drafting players in the past few years. How they've handled their players is another story.

DeMarcus Cousins has been unhappy since his rookie season with the Kings. And now former rookie of the year Tyreke Evans is in the center of trade talks for Sacramento. Both are quality players who have been mismanaged by the Kings.

If Sacramento decides to keep Cousins on board, they'll be in search of a forward to pair up with their disgruntled center. Players like Perry Jones and Jared Sullinger will be popular prospects, but neither are tough down low and could potentially become busts.

2. Portland Trail Blazers

2 of 6

The Portland Trail Blazers may find themselves in a messy situation this summer, especially with their star big man LaMarcus Aldridge.

Aldridge not only suffered a season-ending hip injury last season, he also wound up in trade rumors linked with the Boston Celtics. Due to the $13 million on his contract, Aldridge leaving Portland would be surprising, but still possible.

Portland could fall into the position that has plagued them for as long as the world can remember, which is drafting another big man. The Trailblazers need help at point guard, but a center like Andre Drummond isn't a stretch of a prediction for Portland.

3. Dallas Mavericks

3 of 6

Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and Delonte West are all entering free agency for the Dallas Mavericks this summer. Drafting a point guard should be the biggest priority for Dallas, but Mark Cuban's mind and pocketbook will be aimed in a different direction.

Cuban has never been timid about reeling in big name stars. With players like Dwight Howard and Deron Williams on the chopping block, expect Cuban to heavily pursue those names.

Even with Howard or Williams coming to Dallas, the Mavericks are still not a contender. Instead of drafting a point guard for the future, Cuban will either heavily pursue star-studded free agents or draft the biggest name to fill up seats.

4. Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic continue to spiral in the wrong direction. With Otis Smith and Stan Van Gundy gone, the man calling the shots for the Magic seems to be Dwight Howard.

Howard reportedly wanted Van Gundy gone, and he got his wish. Regardless of Howard going back and forth on his decision to stay in Orlando, all signs point to him wanting to leave. And more than likely, Howard will again get his wish.

Orlando has lost their sense of direction to the point that they considered bringing in Shaquille O'Neal as the next general manager. With Howard being the focal point of the Magic this offseason, who knows where they'll go with their next draft choice.

Point guard would be a logical choice with Jameer Nelson entering free agency after next season. Then again, it's not clear what the Magic plan on doing in terms of their future.

5. Toronto Raptors

5 of 6

The Toronto Raptors have finally assembled some quality building blocks for the future. DeMar DeRozan is a star in the making and Andrea Bargnani, when healthy, is a reliable scorer for the Raptors. However, the Raptors could use some help in the backcourt next to DeRozan.

Because of his size and length, DeRozan could possibly move to small forward, creating an opening at shooting guard for Toronto. Jose Calderon has been efficient as the point for the Raptors, but could use a backcourt mate to help out.

Austin Rivers and Jeremy Lamb will be heavily mentioned as targets for the Raptors. Both are very flashy prospects, but could be a reach at Toronto's pick. Both are high volume shooters, but are also a bit undersized to be natural shooting guards. Both could also be liabilities on the defensive end.

6. New Orleans Hornets

6 of 6

With David Stern stepping down as the owner of the New Orleans franchise, the Hornets are now free to progress. Unfortunately, a mighty long to-do list comes with it.

Eric Gordon isn't likely to return to New Orleans when he enters free agency. Gordon spent a great deal of time on the injured reserve list, but he's still a prolific scorer that many teams would love to have.

New Orleans will likely target Bradley Beal with their lottery pick. Beal holds high potential, but he might not replicate the scoring production that Gordon provides.

The Hornets could also use a big man. They could stretch for a center like Andre Drummond and hope he pans out in a positive way.
