UFC 146 Results: Funniest Tweets About Each UFC 146 Fight

Matt SaccaroJun 7, 2018

The Twitterverse had a lot of funny things to say about UFC 146.

Junior Dos Santos may have smashed Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez bloodied, battered and brutalized Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva into oblivion, but that doesn't mean witticisms and jokes aplenty couldn't be shared in 140 scintillating characters.

What were the funniest tweets observed throughout the night?

Let's take a look (and keep in mind these are in chronological order regarding what fight they pertain to and that fight's place on the card).

Fellow Bleacher Report writer Jonathan Snowden started things off with a cynical jab at the Mike Brown fans, pointing out that beating a guy up in the very first preliminary fight still pales in comparison to other feats in the MMA world:

"

Former world champion looks good in the OPENING FIGHT ON FACEBOOK. Context people.

— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) May 26, 2012"

A stinging barb of a tweet but witty.

Kelly Crigger, author of the book Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of Mixed Martial Arts, killed two birds with one tweet.

He summed up the fight between Kyle Kingsbury and Glover Teixeira, and he also made note of Kingsbury's peculiar appearance:

"

I think I just saw Ron Burgundy get raped.

— Kelly Crigger (@kellycrigger) May 27, 2012"

Maybe after a beatdown of that scale, Kingsbury will really believe that he's Ron Burgundy.

Unfortunately, the Jacob Volkmann vs. Paul Sass fight was too short for any meaningful twitter banter.

However, MiddleEasy.com writer Jason Nawara has something to say before the fight:

"

I want Volkmann to win. We haven't heard what he has to say in an election year.

"
"— Jason Nawara (@JasonNawara) May 26, 2012"

Of course, Nawara is referencing the infamous interview in which Jacob Volkmann called out U.S. President Barack Obama. Fortunately, Volkmann didn't win and therefore didn't have a chance to embarrass himself further.

The Duane Ludwig-Dan Hardy fight was also short, but Matt Simpson had the Twitter world covered:

"

Hardy proves that the 5th time IS the charm.

"
"— Matt Simpson (@battletestedmma) May 27, 2012"

Indeed, Dan Hardy's fifth fight after four losses was finally the one where he picked up a win.

Next up, Jason "Mayhem" Miller vs. C.B. Dollaway—arguably the worst fight of the night but it had what I thought was the funniest tweet of the night, courtesy of MMA Beatdown:

"

How embarrassing is it going to be when Mayhem has to have someone else beat up Dollaway on MTV cause he's getting bullied?

"
"— MMA Beatdown (@MMABeatdown) May 27, 2012"

Could you imagine if MTV saw that tweet and capitalized on it?

The next fight, Edson Barboza vs. Jamie Varner, didn't have so many clever tweets as it did tweets saying "OMG," "UNBELIEVABLE," and "NO WAY," since the fight was a massive upset.

Nevertheless, Jonathan Snowden came to the rescue (and makes his second appearance on this list):

"

Classic Mazzagatti. About 100 extra punches while he just STARES!

"
"— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) May 27, 2012"

The Barboza stoppage was indeed a bit late, although Barboza himself protested after the fight—a loss to a fighter you were expected to trample must be a difficult thing to deal with.

For the Darren Elkins-Diego Brandao fight, it was UFC commentator Joe Rogan who was the subject of a jest over Twitter. Sports-at-work.com writer Josh Webb said the following:

"

You might be impressed with Elkins' ability to recover guard, but I am impressed with the shots he's surviving from Brandao, Joe.

"
"— Josh Webb (@FightOnTwist) May 27, 2012"

In case you didn't see this fight, Brandao was smashing Elkins wish vicious ground-and-pound, but Rogan neglected to comment about that and instead waxed poetic about how amazing it was that Elkins kept regaining guard. True, regaining guard under duress is a great skill, but ignoring the rest of the action going on was almost criminal.

The clash between the talk of the heavyweight town Lavar Johnson and "Skyscraper" Stefan Struve ended up being not a clash at all, but a one-sided affair in which Struve effortlessly submitted Johnson.

An expected end, to some, but ultimately not that exciting. Commenter Matt OCL came up with a solution:

"

@mmaencyclopedia just let him fight pat Barry over and over again, kinda like mma's version of the globetrotters vs the generals

"
"— Matt OCL (@MattOCL) May 27, 2012"

An infinite amount of fights between Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson would be good for warming up a crowd, if nothing else.

Stipe Miocic vs. Shane Del Rosario was one of the more competitive fights of the evening, but the subject discussed in the tweet wasn't anything in the fight itself but rather after the fight. Bleacher Report writer Matt Roth bluntly pointed out how unintelligible Miocic's post-fight interview was:

"

It doesn't sound like Stipe is saying words.

"
"— Matthew Roth (@MattRoth512) May 27, 2012"

The Roy Nelson vs. Dave Herman fight was another that ended quickly, limiting the amount of humor that could be squeezed out of it. Despite this, MMAjunkie editor-in-chief Dann Stupp had a smirk-worthy comment:

"

With a beard like that, I expect to see Roy Nelson panning for gold on one of those Discovery Channel shows.

"
"— Dann Stupp (@MMAjunkieDann) May 27, 2012"

Nelson's beard is just as much a talking point as his physique!

The next tweet is kind of mean—it's the sort of tweet that you can't help but feel you shouldn't find it funny but you do anyway. Fighter/writer Nashville Lee said the following:

"

Legend has it Antonio Silva became a fighter after an Easter Island statue grew a body and swam to brazil to train.

"
"— LEE (@NASHVILLE_LEE) May 27, 2012"

Mean-spirited, perhaps. But it was refreshing to read a tweet about Velasquez-Silva that didn't have to do with blood.

There wasn't anything terribly funny about the main event; Heavyweight title fights are all business. Still, I managed to find a tweet that dropped some knowledge and made a reference to one of the more comical figures in MMA, courtesy of LiverKick.com's twitter account:

"

I'm sorry, those Frank Mir leg kicks look terrible, like something Butterbean would do.

"
"— Liver Kick (@LiverKickdotcom) May 27, 2012"

So those were a sampling of some of Twitter's finest clever sayings and jokes about UFC 146. Please, share below which one you thought was the funniest or most witty.
