Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir Results: 3 Fighters Who Would Challenge Cigano
Junior dos Santos once again proved he is in a class all his own after beating Frank Mir in the second round of their main-event fight in UFC 146.
Cigano kept the fight off the ground and that was clearly the difference in this one. Dos Santos imposed his will on Mir and after doing that, Mir stood no chance against Cigano's standing attack.
You never want to say a fighter in unbeatable, but Dos Santos is as close to that label as you can get. The Brazilian-born fighter has been disposing of opponents on a regular basis.
So is there anyone that can knock off the champ? Here's a look at some of his potential opponents moving forward who could give Dos Santos a run for his money.
Cain Velasquez
After his convincing win over Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, it appears Velasquez once again has big things ahead of him and a shot at another championship run in the heavyweight division.
It wasn't pretty, but Velasquez gave Silva a good old-fashioned butt-whipping and ended the fight late in the first round.
This was Velasquez's first trip to the Octagon since he lost the belt to Dos Santos back in November and he didn't miss a beat. A rematch is all that's on the mind of the former champ at this point.
It didn't take long, but Velasquez has firmly supplanted himself amongst the best in the division and is the most likely candidate for a rematch with the current champ, Dos Santos, right away.
As far as the UFC heavyweight division is concerned: It's only Velasquez and Dos Santos at the moment.
Alistair Overeem
The former heavyweight champion of Strikeforce, Overeem was set to do battle with Dos Santos for UFC 146, but that was halted due to a failed drug test, according to Beau Dure of USA Today.
"They are catching some. Alistair Overeem was supposed to challenge Junior dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 146 on Saturday. But after a news conference in March, Overeem took a drug test. The result: a 14-to-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio, more than twice the limit of 6-to-1 mark.
"
Dure also points out that Overeem will have to wait nine months to reapply for a license in order to fight in Nevada. Granted he might be one of the best matchups out there for Dos Santos, this fight won't happen until next year at the earliest.
That doesn't change the fact that Overeem could give Cigano a run for his money if the two ever met. Certainly, the UFC 146 main event would've been much more competitive had Alistair actually made it to the fight.
Daniel Cormier
The former United States Olympian has made a seamless transition from traditional wrestling to MMA and has proven a worthy opponent after defeating Josh Barnett for the Strikeforce heavyweight championship.
Cormier is a rising star in the sport and continues to get better and gain more credibility with each fight that passes.
However, a broken hand will slow his progress down and he may not take another fight until September or October, according to Matt Bishop of The Detroit News.
"Cormier will undergo surgery on a broken hand next week, he said, before returning to Strikeforce for one more fight before moving on to the UFC. He said he hopes to return in September or October.
"
This will be another potential matchup that will take some patience, but it will be well worth the wait if and when it ever happens. Cormier is the ideal type of fighter to handle Dos Santos.
He has the strength to overpower Dos Santos with great wrestling, get him to the ground and take Cigano out of his comfort zone. I feel Cormier has the best chance to beat Dos Santos moving forward.
This is a fight that must happen at some point in the next year or so and I'm confident Dana White won't disappoint if given the opportunity to make it happen.
