UFC 146 Fight Card: 10 Things We Will Not See Tonight
UFC 146 is tonight and is one of the most anticipated cards in UFC history.
The injury bug took many shots at the card, but still, UFC 146 looks to be one of the most entertaining cards in recent memory.
The main card will feature five heavyweight bouts, including the UFC Heavyweight Championship between Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.
There are a bunch of questions about many of the fighters and fights going into UFC 146, but I'm not here to tell you what is going to happen. I'm here to tell you what isn't going to happen tonight at UFC 146.
There's no question you'll see 10 of the best heavyweights in the UFC in action tonight, but here are 10 things you will not see tonight at UFC 146!
10. We Will Not See the Mike Thomas Brown of the WEC
1 of 10Brown is 1-2 since coming to the UFC and fans are seemingly waiting on the day the Mike Brown that defeated the great WEC star Urijah Faber twice to return, but don’t count on that being at UFC 146.
Actually, I wouldn’t count on seeing him ever again. Brown had a great run in the WEC, but at 36 years old, I see his best days behind him and a match-up with the young and talented Daniel Pineda possibly being the last time we see Brown in the UFC octagon.
9. We Will Not See a Signature Jacob Volkmann Post-Fight Interview
2 of 10Volkmann’s post-fight interviews have been a thing of gold, for the fans at least, not so much for Dana White and Joe Rogan, but Paul Sass is an absolute sick grappler and I see Volkmann’s night being ended rather quickly if he tries to grapple with Sass.
And, hey, even if Volkmann picks up the win, after the UFC and Secret Service have both spoken to Jacob about his past comments, we’ll see a much quieter version of Volkmann at UFC 146.
8. We Will Not See the End of Dan Hardy
3 of 10Everyone is wondering what the magic number for Dan Hardy is. Three? Four?
Hardy has lost four fights in a row, which in most cases, is an easy way to get pink slipped, but Hardy is without question one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, but even the very entertaining Hardy will more than likely find his way out of the UFC with a fifth loss in a row.
I don’t see that happening. “Bang” Ludwig is a good fighter, but I think this is the perfect fight for Hardy to get back on track and pick up a much-needed win.
7. We Will Not See the Same Mayhem Miller We Saw Against Michael Bisping
4 of 10C.B. Dollaway is a very good all-around fighter, but he’s not quite on the same level as Jason “Mayhem” Miller.
We all know how bad Mayhem looked against Bisping, but I saw some picture of Miller from the weigh-ins and all I can say is wow! This Mayhem is in shape and ready to shut the critics up.
I have no problem going out on a limb and saying that Submission of the Night award could be Mayhem Miller’s by the end of UFC 146.
6. We Will Not See an Edson Barboza Spectacular Knockout
5 of 10I know we were supposed to see Barboza challenge talented fellow up-and-comer Evan Dunham, but don’t you dare sleep on Jamie Varner.
I’m not saying Varner is going to pull off this upset, but don’t think he’s going to get caught with one of Barboza’s crazy strikes. Varner has never been knocked out, and I don’t see it happening, at least highlight style, at UFC 146.
5. We Will Not See Darren Elkins Upset Diego Brandao
6 of 10Darren Elkins is 3-1 in the UFC, but hasn’t been overly impressive and now finds himself with former Ultimate Fighter winner Diego Brandao.
Don’t let Brandao’s record fool you. He trains with Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, therefore you know Brandao will come into this fight in great shape and with a sharp game plan.
I look for Brandao to get another big win and possibly propel him into a fight with a higher ranked featherweight fighter.
4. We Will Not See Stefan Struve’s Submission Skills
7 of 10Look, I understand Struve loves to stand and bang and get bloodied up and then make his crazy comeback, but ask Stefan how his comeback worked out against JDS, Nelson, and Travis Browne. His answer, most likely: not very well.
That’s what I expect to happen when he gets in the mix with Lavar Johnson; I mean, dude hits hard.
I know Johnson has pretty bad submission defense, but look at the size difference. How is Struve going to get this fight to the ground?
I think this fight is set up to get Struve’s head knocked off, and I think we just might see that happen.
3. We Will Not See a Main Card Upset
8 of 10By main card, I want to clarify I mean the top three fights, as in JDS-Mir, Velasquez-Silva, and Nelson-Herman.
I’ll go into detail about JDS-Mir in my next slide, but I’ll start with Velasquez-Silva.
Antonio Silva’s chin was put on notice after Daniel Cormier defeated him in the Strikeforce Grand Prix. Now, Silva meets Cormier’s AKA teammate Cain Velasquez, who is a very good striker and I don’t think Silva can handle the pressure Velasquez will put on him.
As for Herman, I’m not saying he doesn’t have a chance. If he comes out and fights like Werdum did using solid Muay Thai and not let Nelson get him to the ground, he has a good chance to compete.
But, Nelson is one of the toughest guys in MMA and I think if Struve finished Herman, then Nelson sure can as well.
2. We Will Not See a New Heavyweight Champion Crowned
9 of 10This one is hard for me, because I’m a pretty big fan of Frank Mir, but, lets face it: JDS is bigger, faster, more athletic, and younger than Mir.
Most the time, I’d make the case that Mir will have a significant advantage due to him being one of the best veteran fighters in the UFC, but against a guy like dos Santos? I think Mir is in trouble.
I don’t want to bash Big Nog’s striking skills, but they aren’t even close to dos Santos’ power and boxing ability; and Nog had Mir rocked before Mir locked in the Kimura heard around Brazil.
Therefore, one has to wonder how Mir thinks he can stand with dos Santos. I’m not going to lie, I’d love to see Mir upset dos Santos and lock in a crazy flying heel hook or a “Showtime” guillotine, but in my opinion, I don’t think Frank Mir can defeat Junior dos Santos at this point in his career.
I see Junior dos Santos defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship.
1. We Will Not See a Boring Night of Fights
10 of 10Just look at this card. People were already talking about UFC 148 being the “super-card” but, I say look at this one.
I mean an undercard stacked with former championship contenders and main card fighters followed by the first all Heavyweight main card in UFC history, there is almost no way this card could disappoint.
With fighters like JDS, Mir, Velasquez, Nelson, Struve, Lavar Johnson, Mayhem Miller, and Barboza…how in the World can anybody not think this isn’t one of the most stacked cards in history?
I can’t wait.
