NBA Rumors: Deron Williams Would Be Foolish to Leave Nets
Prized free agent point guard Deron Williams need to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets. He is not going to find a better situation by bolting to free agency.
Williams is going to get plenty of interest this offseason, and he would be wise to explore all options, but ultimately, he needs to stay right where he is. He appears to be open to this possibility.
Sport Illustrated's Sam Amick sheds some light on Williams' thought process on his future with the Nets:
"The source said Williams' preference, however, is for the Nets to improve the roster sufficiently enough that he can feel good about staying put rather than fear a repeat of this season, when they finished 22-44.
"
Amick also revealed that Williams has interest in joining the Lakers or the Mavericks. While both those franchises have a far richer tradition, and are coming off of better seasons last year, Williams can't let that blind him to the situation.
Both of those clubs are aging. They aren't that far off from the rebuilding process that the Nets are in now, and helping either of these teams get back to the top will not be as rewarding as it is with Brooklyn.
With the Nets, Williams will be the unquestioned star, and the first star of the Brooklyn era. Fans will adore him choosing the Nets. It would be nearly impossible for him to destroy that cushion of goodwill there.
He would not enjoy the same luxury with the other two franchises, as he would come in as the high-priced player with huge expectations.
Also, as Amick pointed out, Williams wants the Nets to improve their roster. They will. It may take some time, but they have a deep pocket owner who has shown he will aggressively try to field a winner (with his trade for Williams and the tireless efforts to try and land Dwight Howard).
With Williams locked up long-term, the task of improving this roster will be even easier. It is just a matter of time before this is a quality team, and when they are, Williams will be the king of a giant market. He would forever be a legend to Nets fans.
Staying with Brooklyn gives him a chance to carve out something he can call his own. This kind of opportunity is rare, and Williams would be a fool to pass on that.
