Penn State Scandal: Latest News and Updates Regarding Jerry Sandusky's Trial

Adam JacobiJun 7, 2018

Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky will be going to trial on June 5, roughly two weeks from now. This isn't new, but it is news. The date was set months ago, but just today, a judge denied Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola's request for a continuance.

Per PennLive.com:

In a one-sentence ruling today, presiding Judge John Cleland denied defense motions for a postponement of the scheduled June 5 start date for jury selection.

[...] The judge's plan may still be thrown off if, for example, it became apparent during juror interviews that the court will need to go outside of Centre County for a jury. But for now, it looks as every effort will be made to start June 5.

Amendola has been trying to get more time to keep preparing Sandusky's defense. In particular, he criticized the state for not providing more specific information in its charges against Sandusky. On multiple occasions, Amendola used that fact to try to get the charges against his client dismissed. Obviously, with a trial still upcoming, those requests have been denied thus far.

Amendola's requests did, however, lead to the prosecution officially providing more information in its complaints. From ESPN:

The state attorney general's office on Friday filed more detailed accusations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, according to a report by the Allentown Morning Call.

According to the report, the new accusations provide in-depth descriptions of the alleged sexual acts Sandusky performed on 10 boys, including more specific information on the nature, time and location of the alleged abuses.

Prosecutors, according to the report, will not add or withdraw any of the 52 counts of sexual abuse against Sandusky.

Prior to these most recent updates, the Sandusky case was thrown into disarray when former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary (who told the grand jury that he witnessed an alleged incident and reported it in graphic detail to Penn State authorities) was forced to amend the date of his allegation by 13 months.

With that revelation, the accusations of perjury and failure to report child abuse against Penn State administrators Gary Schulz and Tim Curley may fall outside the statute of limitations by a matter of months. Their cases are still in the pre-trial stage.
