WWE over the Limit 2012: John Cena Will Win Fans by Demolishing Big Johnny

Andrew KulhaJun 1, 2018

The WWE has been brilliant with the way it has handled the character and storyline of John Cena as of late, and that will be abundantly clear when he destroys RAW and SmackDown general manager John Laurinaitis at Over the Limit 2012.

Now, before we move forward, let me be very clear about my take on the WWE universe: I'm a huge newbie.

Unfortunately, I was one of those poor kids who wasn't allowed to watch professional wrestling growing up. I was sheltered from the likes of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, the Rock, the Undertaker, Triple H and the rest of the crew.

While I may have suffered then—as the rest of my friends were having fun—I do believe it has given me a unique perspective now. About a year ago I re-discovered professional wrestling and have been hooked on the WWE since then.

There's nothing quite like the drama of the first segment on RAW or the literal disdain I feel when a heel ends the night with the upper hand (here's looking at you, Daniel Bryan and Chris Jericho).

There's also nothing quite like the anticipation of what will happen next, and that's exactly what I feel about Over the Limit 2012.

Let me clear about one more thing, since I'm being honest: I'm a big John Cena fan.

Unlike many WWE fans, I haven't grown up watching wrestling, and he hasn't been "shoved down my throat," as many fans claim he was. I don't boo when his music plays, and I certainly don't join the "Cena sucks" faction of the crowd.

I like the guy—sue me.

While I do understand why many people hate Cena, there is no doubt in my mind that the WWE has done a great job with his character as of late.

What better way to get the WWE universe to cheer for Cena than to pin him against its most unlikeable characters?

Many thought Brock Lesnar was going to take Cena's spot with the company, but that thought was quickly stifled when he roared through and destroyed everything in his path, showing no respect for the WWE or its art.

Lesnar was mercilessly booed by crowds once it was clear that he came to be the super heel, and for the first time since I started watching, it looked as if WWE had gotten behind Cena 100 percent.

After defeating Lesnar it would have been easy for the WWE to let Cena go back to his role as the polarizing superstar ("Let's go Cena!" "Cena sucks!"), but they shocked us all by developing the latest and greatest feud with a man that nobody, and I mean nobody, likes.

I'd be surprised if there are 10 people in the crowd at Over the Limit who are rooting for Laurinaitis to win. Not only is he unlikeable but he knows it and doesn't care. He's the definition of a heel, but to make things worse, he has all the power.

Not only is Cena representing himself in this fight, he's now representing anyone and everyone who can't stand Big Johny. By beating him and taking away his power, he has the chance to win all of those people over.

Perhaps Cena will never be unanimously liked by a crowd, but for the first time since I've been a fan, it seems like everybody is rooting for him to win.

When he beats Big Johnny in the ring at Over the Limit, I expect it to be a rather good demolition.

It will be the type of beatdown that will allow every WWE fan who has ever "had it up to here" with Lauranaitis to experience that great feeling of redemption that can only come from watching the heel go down.

The WWE has done a great job slowly but surely bringing the universe back to Cena, and it will culminate at Over the Limit.

Not only will Cena win but he'll win over some fans, too.

By the way: If you're as big of a WWE fan as I am, go check out my friends at Ring Rust Radio (Some language NSFW). They always bring the heat and come strong with their opinions on the latest from the WWE.
