2012 Preakness Post Positions: Longshots Who Have an Edge

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

If I'll Have Another taught us anything at the Kentucky Derby, it's that you shouldn't overlook the longshots at the Preakness Stakes this weekend—

and that an outside post position (I'll Have Another came from No. 19) isn't the end of the world.

So, even though he and Bodemeister are the two clear favorites (and they have very solid post positions in No. 9 and 7, respectively), you shouldn't ignore the longshots.

Well, you shouldn't ignore them if you want to win a little bit of money. Here's a look at the underdogs that will surprise some people at Pimlico.

Daddy Nose Best (No. 8)

Daddy Nose Best was disappointing at Churchill, as he finished 10th and never got away from the middle of the pack. But he had a lot of momentum going into that race and should fair much better in a smaller field.

Most importantly, though, trainer Steve Asmussen has won two of the last five runnings of the Preakness with Curlin and Rachel Alexandra.

Don't count out this horse, who is right in between the two favorites and will benefit if he takes a similar approach that I'll Have Another did in the Kentucky Derby—by waiting behind the opening pace and then making a late move.

Went the Day Well (No. 5)

Went the Day Well came into the Kentucky Derby with just 30-1 odds, but severely out-raced that number, finishing an impressive fourth.

With the No. 5 position, this horse is solidly on the inside, but not too close to the rail where he will get trapped.

Remember, Shackleford, last year's winner at the Preakness, also came from the No. 5 position. At 12-1 odds, you could find a lot of worse horses than Went the Day Well, who has plenty of momentum on his side.

Teeth of the Dog (No. 2)

Of the "long" longshots, I like Teeth of the Dog best.

He has made steady progression over his last few races, and at the Grade-1 Wood Memorial, he finished an impressive third despite being a 50-1 longshot.

He'll have an inside position at Pimlico, and as long as he avoids getting bottled up at the beginning, Joe Bravo will easily have this horse making some noise.

Don't overlook this horse.
