WWE Over the Limit 2012: CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan Will Be Match of the Year
When defending WWE Champion CM Punk squares off against Daniel Bryan for the title at Over the Limit, they will put on the best match of 2012.
This match has five-star written all over it.
As much as WWE is setting this bout up to fail by not building a clear storyline to the match and adding no real main event to the card, this is the chance for D-Bry and Punk to put the company on their back and take the WWE Universe to the next era.
All of the following reasons will make this match the best on the card and the best of 2012.
Chemistry
After years of working together in not just Ring of Honor, but every independent promotion that would allow them, these two men know each other like the back of their hands.
Punk and Bryan have perfect styles for each other, and the matches they have had in the past have all been amazing. If they can replicate the same technical wizardry while keeping the picky WWE fans enthralled, there is no reason why these wrestling artists can't paint the perfect picture.
While there is almost no storyline between this duo in terms of WWE creative, that will not take away from how they act the match out. All the WWE has to do is tell Punk and Bryan who is heel and who is face, and they are smart enough to do a better job on their own without the creative department.
Commitment to Selling
As important as wins and losses are in sports, they mean almost nothing in the WWE and the world of sports entertainment. It’s all about selling the product.
With both Punk and Bryan wanting more than anything to make the other look super strong coming out of this match, no matter who eventually wins, both men will walk away better off than before.
The real-life friendship between this duo will have them planning this match far in advance and planning to leave everything on the mat. If you think Dolph Ziggler can sell a move, wait until you see Bryan and Punk selling for each other.
Fighting for the Future
The WWE has always had problems accepting stars from other companies—especially if their gimmick was built by their competition. Just look at Daniel Bryan—he was Bryan Danielson in Ring of Honor before changing his name at the WWE’s request.
With that said, this main event for the WWE title features two of the greatest independent wrestlers of the last 10 years. If you had told me in 2004 that CM Punk and Bryan Danielson would be in the WWE fighting for the top prize in 2012 after what the company did to WCW, I wouldn’t have believed it.
Here we are, and the duo knows exactly what’s at stake.
Guys like Seth Rollins, Antonio Cesaro and Kassius Ohno will all be watching this match and the subsequent PPV numbers. Those results will depict how heavily the former ROH wrestlers will be pushed.
If this match and PPV are a success, we will see a big push for all parties with the ROH lineage. If this fails, WWE will force the former Indy wrestlers to shoulder the blame.
Punk and Bryan will take the weight of that burden during the Over the Limit event and put on the greatest match of their careers.
