Deron Williams Would Be Foolish to Re-Sign with Brooklyn Nets as Free Agent

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Deron Williams and the Brooklyn Nets will meet in Turkey to discuss the future of the free agent point guard, according to the New York Post.

"

The Post has learned that Mikhail Prokhorov will be with King and Williams for CSKA Moscow’s semifinal Friday against Panathinaikos. With Williams famously set to explore free agency this summer -- and with his hometown Mavericks, fresh off their four-game sweep at the hands of the Thunder, expected to be the primary challengers for his signature -- the fact that he’s spending time during the offseason with King and Prokhorov can only be seen as a good sign for the team’s chances of keeping him.

Williams is a superstar player in the prime of his career, and would be foolish to re-sign with a Nets team that is still years away from being a legitimate NBA Finals contender.

One of the few reasons to re-sign with the Nets is that they can offer Williams more money than any other team, but that's insignificant when you consider the fact he's already made a lot of money throughout his career and will make lots of money in endorsements wherever he signs this summer.

Per ESPN:

"

When Williams opts out, he can re-sign with Brooklyn for five years and $109 million -- or one year and $28 million more than any other team based on the new rules of the CBA.

"

This year's free agent class isn't very deep and lacks star power, so there aren't many top-tier players that the Nets could sign to pair with Williams for next season.

The Nets came into this season with a goal of surrounding Williams with talent to convince him to re-sign long-term with the franchise, which is moving to Brooklyn next season. Thus far, they have done a poor job in building a roster of talent capable of competing for the playoffs.

The Nets desperately want Williams to remain with the team so they can open up next season in their new arena and city with a superstar player to market to an excited fanbase.

For basketball reasons, Brooklyn makes little sense for Williams. He would be better off signing with the Dallas Mavericks, a team much closer to a title than the Nets.

Dallas is Williams' hometown, and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is one of the most competitive owners in sports. He is willing to spend money and make bold decisions to help the Mavericks compete every year, which is the ideal environment for every superstar.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov intends to spend lots of money to make his team competitive too, but unless they can acquire some talented young players via trade, Brooklyn won't be drastically improved through free agency this offseason.

If Williams wants to win now and in the future, while making a lot of money at the same time, Dallas is the best option for him in free agency, and not Brooklyn.
