How Will Fans React to C.J. Wilson's Return to Texas?

Lance ReavesMay 9, 2012

C.J. Wilson is returning to Texas for the first time as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He will likely square off against his replacement, rookie Yu Darvish.

This game will be worth watching for a variety of reasons, but the focus here will be how Ranger fans will react when C.J. takes the mound with his red glove accompanied by Angels attire.

Wilson had an interesting career in Texas. He started in the rotation where he went 1-7 with an ERA just under seven his rookie season in 2005. A move to the bullpen followed where he found some success as a closer and setup man.

After four seasons in the bullpen, C.J. was given a second chance to be a starter in 2010, leaving many wondering if he could handle the transition.

The lefty proceeded to exceed expectations. Wilson proved to be very durable and was a big part of the team’s success the next two seasons. He won 31 games and was named to the All-Star team in 2011.

This is still a great accomplishment, but the problem is that Wilson’s story does not end there. His performance in the postseason still leaves many Rangers fans with a sour taste in their mouths, particularly last season. This may play a part in how he is received in Arlington on Friday.

It’s safe to say that C.J. did not perform like a top of the rotation ace, finishing the 2011 playoffs with an 0-3 record and a 5.79 ERA. He also took the loss in the All-Star game after surrendering a three run homer to Prince Fielder, which cost Texas home-field advantage in the World Series.

The loss in the Fall Classic still stings, but Wilson certainly isn’t to blame for everything that happened. He played his heart out for the team, he just didn’t get the results he was hoping for.

Still, he shouldn’t exactly expect a standing ovation from the crowd. What will earn him the most jeers and boos is simply the fact that he signed with the Rangers’ biggest rivals. Yes, the Angels are C.J.’s hometown team, but that probably won’t mean too much come game time.

Had he signed with any other team, such as the Marlins, the reactions would be much different.

However, Wilson signed within the division, to a team that spared no expense in their quest to dethrone the Rangers.

This makes him the opposition. Rangers fans would not be doing their job if they did not try to make Wilson’s start as difficult as possible, just like they would for any other opposing pitcher.

In terms of the game, the matchup should be fun to watch. This is the first game in an anticipated series. Plus, it's pretty ironic that Wilson and Darvish are the guys who will kick it off.

Wilson knows the Rangers' hitters pretty well, and vice versa.

This three game series is pretty much sold out. The fans are ready, so it's time to see how everything plays out.
